1. Over the few years I've been a member on here I've saw quite a lot of people say things like "Fenders are the only cool basses" or '5+ strings aren't cool' and things to that effect.

My personal thoughts on it are that it depends who is playing (and more importantly how they are playing it). I know that If I'm at a gig and someone is playing something other than a Fender J or P bass I find it a bit of a breath of fresh air seeing/hearing something different than usual. I can't say I find an instrument itself cool but I certainly enjoy when I can see someone play something out of the ordinary.

Basically I'm curious about the general thoughts regarding 'cool' basses on here.

Also. What makes you find certain basses 'cool'?

  2. I always have the following in my gig bag

pliers/string cutters

spare 9v battery (I really should carry two considering one of my basses is 18v)

screwdriver

allan keys

pen/pencil

small torch (to be fair, it's for the luminlay markers but it's a damn good torch if required)

generally keep a pick or two in there for the guitarists inevitable incident.
3. I'm quite lucky in the band I'm in that we 1. Don't really do stuff like this too often. 2. Whenever we do it we're usually pretty good at communicating our intentions for how it goes so it usually doesn't seem like a fluff up to people watching.

I would say it depends on the solo though. If it's a solo that's just there for the sake of it (which lets face it, so many guitar solos are) then I'd like to cut back in after 7 bars but if it was some iconic guitar solo that everybody knew then I'd come in after it was finished.

  4. If you're used to 4 strings you may have to adjust. Saying that when I first picked up a 5 string it instantly felt more at home compared to a 4 string. I also find 5 string necks to be much more comfortable to play but a lot of people don't.

So really my comment here is pretty useless as it depends what works for you personally.

Finding it hard to believe this is the ninth one! Glad to hear ticket sales are going well :)

Gawd. It's being going on for almost double the length of time I've even been playing bass

Glad I managed to get a ticket, enjoyed myself last year.

Good, but necessary from that vid. Better would have been sending a string without asking for the original back, that is the experience I have had with other string manufactures before (Elixir).

I had this issue recently with the B string on a pack of Elixirs and they sent me out a full new set of strings and asked to send them the dodgy string back in an envelope they were sending me. I didn't get the envelope (meaning I had no address to send to) so e-mailed asking for the address and they just asked me to send a picture of the string... ?

Great customer service. Got a few picks with the strings as well. Handy to have even though I never use them.

Cameron, I'll bring it along to the Moffat Bash if you fancy a widdle.

Ha! You wouldn't be saying that if you had ever saw me play a guitar!

I haven't got my ticket for the bash yet cause of money issues but hoping to get a weekend ticket before they're all gone!

It’s like music is moving on but the covers bands refuse to.
This is why I really can't stand cover bands. No offence to those who are in them (quite frankly I would be if I had the chance as they actually get paid after a gig) but I just find that they all play middle of the road songs with nothing of interest going on. I suppose this is what the punters want though.

  9. I play a 5 string with everything. I just find it overall more comfortable to play and I like having the option of lower notes/being able to play the same notes but higher up the neck. Doing the latter gives the notes a different sound to my ears so it's a good thing to be able to have.

6 string necks are just a little thicker than what I find comfortable and the string spacing on 4 string basses is too much for me.
