  1. Of course. Personally I'd have a hard time playing in a band with a guy that's been ripping off other musicians. Maybe they don't hear from bass players he's stolen from.
  2. 10 minutes in and realise.... * mildly surprised Claypool's not English! (dunno how I got that idea) * more "let tell you about my whole life" rather than an interview. A great style and service from Beato * how nice it is to watch YT vids embedded, no ads!
  3. How are professional bands employing this fraudster and thief?
  4. With a limited number of pedals and devices (to use in my signal paths) Pre, Post, Amp, DI, BT, IEM (band feed, bass), transmitter headphones, etc, rather than having to move and jig devices and their connections around into different configurations based on the use case: practice at home, band rehearsals, videoing, gigging, I'm thinking about audio routing with 1/4" patch panels (or other compact mono or stereo patch cables). I'm thinking it might be worth the effort and sacrifice. Has anyone tried this before and if so what worked/didn't etc?
  5. I'm on the B-string a fair bit because of the key changes. Also some handy open strings are no more. On the other hand I'm glad Brown Eyed Girl and Crazy Thing Called Love are original key, they'd have been a pain to change as they are fiddly and I play them in another band.
  6. They do down well I'm told! It's definitely helpful. I'm paying attention to the recorded songs that fade out, as I'm pretty sure they won't on the night! Will be checking with the drummer who is in top of the songs and has more time before the gig (he plays in their other band I just started depping with). Thanks for the tip. It's a long record and I don't think they'll play it that long, so hopefully be less opportunities to get out of sync!

    Jazz

Not bad, thanks @nilorius, but not as good a set of tones that Ігор Одарюк, a talented Ukrainian bassist, managed to get out of the JO5 he tested. For sure it's partly in the fingers!

  9. Great to read all the comments, tips, experiences, memories and choices! Hopefully depping will be a bigger part of my playing life from now on for all sorts of reasons that many have mentioned already. The dep setlist for this Saturday. A few days into a week's notice and seven basslines I already knew.
  10. No mistakes from Thomann yet, though a bass gigbag had it's strap fixing tear away from the case and they refunded it in full and didn't want the bag back. Nothing but great experience from them this past year.
  11. For me it was jam nights and pub gigs where I met various musicians and it started from there, not just bands but making musician friends who introoduce you to others etc. However they tend to be around my age though (50s to 60s), the young ones generally want to play with their own generation! The other thing is to meet up with guitarists and drummers, so, if you're desperate check out, ads in the music shop (chatting to the staff also good), guitar and drum forums and search for the area of interest to narrow it down. Also there are quite a few ads for bassists here on BC, so maybe some are ideal or close to your preferences, so that chatting with them might lead to other musicians they know looking too.
  12. This world of depping is new to me and I'm enjoying the entree Those that dep, please share your tips and experiences! Anyone with other questions please chime in. What works for you, when need to perform large setlists (most which you didn't know before)? How much notice do you usually get (e.g. availability check, confirmation)? Do you have any principles for fee (e.g. same as the bassist you're replacing or regular band member, cash, delayed transfer)? Any good habits that help you get on with your bandmates and perform better as a dep? Do you read when performing (sheet, tablet - notation, tab, chord charts) if some of the band does? Any generic practice or preparation that is particular useful for depping bassists? Clothing: anything you have had to wear in particular, that has got used ? # Background So after many stops and starts playing bass over the years with a few startup originals and covers bands, with extra time on my hands to practice and play more, I've found myself getting into depping (been asked twice by the same band leader for 2 different bands: a large soul band and a rock band: all popular covers for pubs &functions). It was a bit daunting to be asked at very short notice - it was 30 hours before the gig - though they'd asked whether I'd generally be interested a couple of months before, but no commitment or gig in place. 30+ soul and funk songs, 23 or so, that I'd never learnt before. It was sketchy for a number of reasons on the 1st gig, but the one the next evening went better. I've more notice on this next one - a full week, yay! - and it's 30+ rock songs of which I'm working through now. 2nd dep gig, a couple of weeks ago... VID20250824205002.mp4
  13. Thanks for the insights @Killerfridge @Risk101 !
  14. Ideally I'd like to try this out before buying. I hope they are not just for sale online. Anyone near Louth, Lincolnshire with one? I'd be prepared to travel to a guitar shop, if not too far, that has one.
  15. If this thread does not harm relationships between any number of basschatters, it'll be a miracle.
  16. What were traditionally the topics to avoid at polite dinner parties: politics and religion? It might just apply to bands and whole music industry.....
  17. Views are relative aren't they? An extreme view might just be one that is at it's root very opposite to our own view on the matter. We could also discover that our particular view is equally extreme (however middle of the road and reasonable we are convinced we ourselves are) because it is diametrically opposite from the view we consider extreme. All of those people on either side would consider the others extreme. Perhaps labelling views or people as extreme may be pointless and counterproductive. Views, in my view 😁, can and should be discussed. People on the other hand, whatever their views, can act like absolute twats and if they upset the band as a whole (or pick on a member of it) then they are better off moving on. I wonder how fully pro bands handle difficult band members and where the overlap is in typical workplaces.
  18. I prefer to use the sound of drums than a metronome. It keeps it interesting and adds feel. There are so many sources these days. In brackets (is what I use). drum machine (Alesis SR-16) drum software (Loopz on Android) drums stems, ie real drums from music tracks (Moises on Android and Linux) drums from pedals (Valeton GP-5 its cool for practice as the output to headphones includes the drums and my bass) Good luck with your journey. You're asking a load of good questions - don't let yourself get overwhelmed! Play often and with other supportive musicians as much as possible.

    Valeton GP-5

Has anyone got decent synth sounds out of their GP-5?
  20. I'm tempted to have a few lessons with him. I've the time but not the budget for many lessons. Were your lessons with Ian in person or over the internet?
  21. For bass playing in a band setting, how do you find they compare with studio headphones or other IEM brands @acidbass ? These, presumably, inexpensive IEM 75 headphones, for me, are far closer to studio headphones than they are to the KZs.
  22. "Rod Stewart destroys AI bots with insane brick-throwing, that isn't what you think" with crappy soundtrack and American voiceover.. Feeble tragic stuff (twats that misuse AI have a lot to answer for!) but at least the comments brought out some laughs....
  23. Out of curiosity I've just tried the basic looking headphones that came with the used "the t.bone IEM 75" system and I'm shocked how much better they are than the multi-driver, cool looking and ergonomically better KZs that I've been using, with upgraded cables too. I've been getting a lot of hiss recently, assumed it was probably a combination of the wireless bass and wireless IEMs, so was troubleshooting with AB testing out different kit, hence the IEM 75s out of curiosity really, as I had no intention of using them before. Not not though - I've got to figure out a way that they can stay in my ears. I'd not been happy with the tinny sound of the KZs either and had upgraded both the cables and the tips trying various types, memory foam etc. Even with the stock flimsy silicone tips that came with the IEM 75, the sound is much better, louder, clearer with actual bass. I'm stunned, really. With all the positive reviews and no previous experience of any IEMs, let alone high end IEMs, I'd assumed that KZs were good and it was a matter of finding the"right" pair, cable and tips for your needs and desires. Not so sure now.... * KZ ZS10 PRO X * KZ EDX Pro X
  24. MobileSheets Pro user too. I can highly recommend for Android. Very low cost, huge range of features and customisations to get what you need. I've been using it for all my charts for a couple of years and other band members who need one and have seen mine have got it too. I like that I can import PDFs and Images on my fast phone, then do a two-way sync with my tablet in seconds. It works with my page turner has night mode etc. It also excellent documentation and a large active user base (has it's own helpful forum). From my phone (for convenience for this post, when playing I use the table)... Song view (easily filterable to find the songs you want) Setlist list view Setlist view (top song is a PDF from a bassist I depped, the bottom one is a PNG image I added)
  25. Maybe all of us have gear lying around that can be used to listen to the bass in a very portable and simple (at most one device) fashion? The audio signal from the bass is so low, it needs amplification to drive headphones. Over the years I've practiced fine with all of these..... (when travelling, of the ultraportable ones, the Boss BR-80 has been the best)
