1.
No, not really, I'd not like any band that sounded bad, but the nature of these gigs are that they are a compromise...and if you are talking pubs then most are the opposite of suitable for music anyway. Personally, I can live with a vox only P.A if most other basses are covered, I'm just not going to stress over a lot of the other stuff for diminishing returns. Depends on how far below a certain threshold tho.
I agree re: pubs, most of them are aweful places for sound. I suppose it all depends on what lengths you are happy to go to really. Personally, I don't mind carrying the few extra boxes that are needed for full PA as opposed to vocal only and I actually enjoy the mixing part and trying to get the best sound in difficult conditions. But, I understand that isn't everybody's thing.
2.
You have limited instrumentation and you pick tracks that have a good few parts missing..or the lead singer isn't actually very good and can't sing the song.
sh*t! I didn't realise you had actually seen us So, I guess we are a bit crap anyway so why worry about the sound...............is that what you mean?
3. We are a three piece! I don't think I have ever associated us with the word "professional" though. But I do remember the early/pre full PA days when we'd have people at the back shouting "can't hear the guitar! Turn it up". Guitarist would oblige and then everyone at the front could hear nothing but guitar. £60 each or full band? We usually come out with about £60 each and are quite happy to do it for that but we have occasionally done gigs for nowt if we suport the cause and the full PA still comes. If it was just a job and we didn't do it for the love as much as the money then we might think differently but we do and we don't..............err should that be the other way around MInd you, if we were doing it more for the money then I would imagine that we could charge more if everyone in the room went away saying "That band had a great sound".
4. I know this thread has been done to death now but I can't ever recall hearing a band in a pub full of bodies with vocals only in the PA where the sound travels well to the back of the room. In my experience they can sound great at the front of the crowd but by the time you get to the back usually all you can hear is the vocals firing over peoples heads and the rest is just a muddy noise. For this reason we take the full PA everywhere and everything goes through it.
5. Bollocks! Couldn't have the impressions taken because of wax in one ear so gotta go back in a couple of weeks when its gone. Strangely, my deaf ear was completely clear.
6. Well, I have an apointment booked for tomorrow afternoon to get a set of moulds for the er17s...............................just had a fun half hour with the other half plucking hairs outa my earholes so they don't have to shave the moulds after they pull em out..................
7. Can anyone tell me how the responce of the custom er17s compare to the ACS Pacatos? I use the pacatos at practice and find that I can hear all the instruments fine(although the guitar sounds a bit dull) but I really struggle to hear my vox with them in. I assume the er17s use a different filter?
8. That is the other side of the street from where I was staying. Wish I had known, would have had a look in. Anyway, it was a great weekend in a great city, even though I didn't catch any live music. Cheers to all for the advice!
9.
Can't really compare as one is earplugs with filters, the other is an in-ear monitor!
I'm pretty sure he said earlier in the thread that he had some 64 audio plugs first before the IEMs(could have misunderstood though) They do make plugs as well as IEMs.
10. Hi dood! How would you compare the clarity/ frequency responce between the er15s and the 64 audios?
11. Wow! Don't think I'm going to have time to check out all those in one weekend..............I'll give it a good go though! Cheers Folks!
12. Cheers folks! Staying on Oxford road so that's handy! Yeh, a mate recommended visiting the Northern Quarter so will defo check that out!
13. I've been to Manchester a couple of times before for gigs but just quick in and out trips and not had a look around. So, gonna spend this weekend in the city and would be grateful for any info on things to do. Particularly interested in vintage/used bass/guitar/amp shops. Vinyl record shops. Small venues/music pubs likely to have bands playing Alt Rock/grunge/stoner/heavy type bands. Cheers!
14. Cheers for the link to the other thread EBS freak! I hadn't seen it. Just read a page or two and there is some very good info in there!
15. Interesting! will have a look at those. Cheers!!
16. There seems to be a lot of good reasons here for going down the IEM route and I am seriously considering it. I guess it could also clean up our sound quite a bit with not having to run backline so loud and no monitors. I think my one of my main worries is that it could feel a bit isolated from the crowd. We have quite a bit of between songs banter with the crowd and short of putting a mic on the crowd I am wondering how we are going to hear them? And even with a mic on em you wont be able to tell which direction a comment has come from.
17. Not sure if I should start a new thread here but this one seems to address many of the questions I have.. Our band are currently considering going with either IEMs or ACS Pro17 moulded plugs. Lead singer/guitarist is struggling with his tinitus, so much that he cancelled band practices until he can get some decent hearing protection sorted. My own tinitus is ever present but at the moment is something I can live with but nevertheless needs addressing. I use ACS pacatos at practices but go without at gigs as I can't hear my BVs properly with them in. He can't get used to/hates any of the cheaper unmoulded plugs( he's never tried the moulded ones, neither have I). We are a loud grunge/alt rock three piece. Good PA system which everything goes through to a certain level depending on venue. Loud backline and monitors to keep up with a very loud drummer. We don't gig enough/earn enough from gigs to justify expensive IEMs but the LD ones linked to earlier in this thread are similar price to custom moulded plugs although we would have to add in upgraded ear buds from what I have read. For practices we could use a cheap headphone amp and phones but gigs need to be addressed also. Are the cheep IEM systems reliable? Has anyone gigged with the moulded plugs? Experiences/ opinions welcome!
18.
Even with a 810 running at full tilt, your trousers won't flap. I think people mistake ragged ears for moving rags. You need to move some serious air to get any movement - and we are talking a lot more that even the biggest bass rigs.
My old Peavey cab with a single 18 and two 10s certainly used to flap my trousers. I could feel them slapping on the backs of my calves and knees. Great feeling!
19. For me, the only thing wrong with that album is that Hole didn't make it on there. A cracking track that gives away all of their influences in one song! I was lucky enough to catch them in a fairly small venue while touring that album, Ace gig!!
20. Lots of good bands being mentioned here! I enjoyed many of them during my "embracing my Irish heritage" years!
21. The "8 ohm brass unit" in that picture, that is being refered to as a tweeter. Looks more like the tweeter level control to me! Hah! 3below beat me to it!
22. Yeh, we regularly cover three RB songs. Always get a good reception and get the crowd going!
23.
pissed up yobos..............gone down a storm, got repeat bookings and even had someone piss all over them in the bogs whilst explaining they are the best band they have ever seen ect
Oi! Have you been trying to steal our crowds
