1. I used to use 1.5 and 2mm picks, but i wasnt comfortable with them(Except 1, which i still have, Dunlop Tortex Sharp 1.5mm). I now use Jim Dunlop Tortex 1.14mm and also occasionally some 1mm (I think) Claytons. They feel more comfortable and actually give me a good tone.

The sharp (EXCELLENT for speed playing, im gonna try the 1.14mm soon)

    And the Tortex 1.14's

Both awesome, but i prefer the 1.14mm, i think thats the right thickness for me and what i want.

A hefty stash of Dunlop Tortex 1.14mm picks

  3. WOW. That is one niiiceeeeeeeee Jazz bass, something like the one i have planned for when i can afford it. You've got yourself a damn good bass there it would seem.

  4. That is one nice looking bass there. I wish i could afford a Bongo, but a schoolkids bank balance doesnt alow for £1500 basses. I agree with the scratchplate change also, that was one pretty hideous tort plate.

However after a bit of searching and a bit of a wait,,,,I finally got my replacement scratchplate. In my eye this really makes the bass so much better.

  5. The Ibanez GSR200 is a brilliant bass for the money (I payed £150 in '07 for mine) especially for someone just starting out on bass, so i recommend one of those, but as always, go and play some basses in your budget and pick which one feels and sounds best to you.
Hello,

Everything I read so far were really helpful. I used to play guitar a few years ago and i have an acoustic bass as well but I haven't played for a few years and I want to buy an electric bass and start from the beginning again.

I've done a lot of research on basses on the internet but I haven't been in a shop yet ( which i will do soon).

My budget is 200 pounds. Any recommendations for a new or used bass.

I've also seen a few interesting models :

    Tanglewood 4PB/4 ST
    Ibanez GSR180, GSR 200JB, RBX170
    Yamaha RBX170,RBX270J
    Peavy millenium 4BXP
    Washburn T14 CG,XB 120TR

If you have any knowledge on these instruments please make a comment or please tell me your thoughts.

    Thanks
6.
I actually still have and use the thin crappy black nylon strap i got with my very first ever bass (a Squier P-Bass with a 15w amp and viper cable nearly 10 years ago!) on my Washburn with Grolsch washers.

    Truckstop
Same here, without the washers. i only used it on my main bass for about a year and a half but its now on my Ibanez and still gets used at my gigs. Its lasted 4 years so far. It's too short though, but i only need that bass for about 4 songs so i can cope.

  7. I play mainly 5, i could easily live without one, just after playing one for a year and getting used to playing songs on it, it just feels easier, and also i think i look wierd with a 4, it looks too small on me, so theres abit of aesthetic in there too. My next bass is either gonna be a 5 or 6, unless i find a REALLY good deal on a MusicMan Stingray 3EQ.

  8.
Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass V Active + buy the Mrs something special with the change = very under-rated brand new fiver + a guaranteed xmas blowie. :)
I agree. One of these with new pups and pre, and new hardware if you want, and a setup, you will have yourself a nice 5'er for under a grand.

  9. Bump for it being tonight.

In reply to my 2nd post we are not headlining as they found another act, but we're on 3rd (Around 9:30) so we've got to put on a good show. Half original half covers (Ish) set so it should be pretty fun. Hope to see some of you there.
Doors: 7pm Tickets £6 on the door.

  10.
However two days to get a track recorded and mixed is really getting a move on, especially with backing vocal, I can see why he wanted to minimise the fuss!

I'd want the tracking done in entirety before lunch on day 1, so the lead vox can be done int he afternoon, bv's and overdubs morning day two, mix down afternoon day 2.

If your drummer used his own kit (rather than just his snare and cymbals) then you probably didnt have time to do anything but the path of least resistance on bass IMO. Getting great drum sounds takes serious effort.
You guys take 2 days for 1 track? My band managed to do 3 tracks in one day, using our own drums, bass with DI and Mic, 2 guitar tracks per song, 3 takes per person per song, and backing vocals. Actually turned out pretty good (Its in my sig)

  11. Think the best i can put forward is my band not recieving a single bad comment at practically every gig from our 3rd onwards. Also, being told that i am too good for my band, and i need better players. Not bad for me age.

    Liam

  12. I use pound shop cheapo gloves (Always warm) that i have cut the end of the thumb and first finger off on one glove, so i can hold a pick and i wear them at band practice, its definately a good idea. If you dont use a pick you could always just put gloves on and play like that, i found it actually gave a nice tone which is wierd.
