  1. Anyone ever heard this. Came across it by accident on Youtube. Its an early recording of Rush from 1974 in Ohio just one month after Neil Peart joined. This is Rush doing what they do best. Some amazing bass going on back then when they were early 20's. https://youtu.be/tbiOJ2fiqNM
  2. Better they told you sooner rather than later when you had learned the set for them. I'd try to stay amicable if you can. You never know what's gonna happen in the future and keeping amicable contacts is the way to go. If things change for them they can still call on you and you'll have the option of being the better person. You can either accept the position or simply say you are already with another band and you come out looking good with everyone. They could pass your details onto other bands that might be looking for a bass player. On the other hand you could give them abuse and that might follow you around the local circuit. Best stay amicable and just accept they wanted their mate. Nothing to do with you or your ability. Hopefully you'll get something else quickly and just move on. Dave

  4. Sure @karlfer might be able to help here. Think he's had a couple of the passive PJ versions. Mine is active and even with passive mode the P on its own just doesn't have that P tone. My Sandberg VM4 is the same altho its closer to a P than my P deluxe when solo'd on P pick up on passive mode. I therefore have a fancy for a standard P bass (curently looking at Vintera range) GAS is so hurtful. Dave

  11. Oddly enough the rehearsal studios i use have about 12 or 13 rooms all have Ampeg 810 with usually an EBS HD360 head. Depending on room i've noted differences in tone from the cabs with amp settings remaining same. Room sizes vary a little but not much.. I've always suspected that some speakers have been replaced but no idea wheteher the good cabs have the originals speakers or replacements ? Maybe they are different age cabs ? The good ones sound fuller and warmer yet still retain a sharpness when playing faster passages. Others are more woolly sounding where definition isn't so good. Rooms are all laid out in same manner with Marshall guitar amp one side of drums and bass cab on other side (snare side). That to me does suggest that different speakers in same cabs will sound different. Again its probably just me that notices it as no-one else has said anything. They probably don't listen to the bass anyway. They have commented on guitarists sound tho. Dave

  15. It was after i posted that i recognised the name and i couldn't find him on a google search penny dropped so i might lok into that too. What were the minor issues you had with yours ? Dave

That's an interesting point as most of the time i just want to hear my bass on stage but saying that along with everyone else in my current band we noticed a huge difference in depth of tone using the mesa rig compared to my Markbass rig or even the EBS HD360 and 810 Ampeg cab in the studios. At gigs it seems to carry better. Not sure how much of that is down to the amp itself tho. Other than bass players i'm not sure anyone in an audience would ever notice whether its a cheap or expensive cab or a 15 or 410 cab provided it wasn't distorted. I know guys that use Bugera amps and cabs and they have a great tone. I hear other bass players using the same Markbass rig i had and they have a nice tone out front. Its something i found with Markbass rig that it wasn't great on stage sound but walk out front and it sounded great. This is always gonna be a contentious topic and i look forward to reading what comes along. Dave

  18. For many years in late 80's / early 90's i had no backline at all. 3 piece band doing rock / prog covers and originals and no matter what size the gig i went straight to desk. Not sure i could have done that in a larger band but with guitar bass and drums all thru PA (Simmonds drum kit) it was easy to distinguish between bass and guitar. In more recent times i went back to having a backline. I normally use a Mesa rig with PH212 cab but i also have a Berg HT322 with a 12 and 2x10's and the difference is quite noticeable. 10's seem to bring that sharper cleaner sound than the 212 cab. I know they are different design cabs but its something i've found over 40+ yrs playing all sorts of cabs. The big thing these days for me is i like to hear myself on stage within larger bands. I find the Mesa gives me a similar tone to our PA which is a bonus. Dave

Altho i never tried the bass in guitar guitar i did manage to feel the neck width and i have to admit it did feel better or shall i say more comfy to me than the US standard or originals whatever they are called these days. (i'm losing track of what Fender bass is what) It was the white (blonde) one that i preferred but having seen the red one in DV247 at £689 i'm kinda tempted. Then seeing the green one above was pretty impressed with yours @artisan Its so difficult with a choice of 3 Dave

  23. Can you take his bass lines and modify them to something that you like with your take on it but still retaining some of his basic idea. I get the feeling its not intentional on his part and he probably hasn't given it much thought. He's been focused on how the song sounds in his head. Worth talking to him see what he thinks. He might value your input and help in improving the songs. Dave
  24. If he's doing sax / vox / keys then maybe he sees himself as the songwriter and Band Leader. If its his song or idea he'll have something in his head for the bass line and that's where he's coming from ........maybe
