EVH plays melodic solos tho. I know what you are saying. I've been to see bands i like and the solos are pretty boring and not impresive to me but i still go to see the band. Bit like many drum solos. Only drummers will appreciate it unles its entertaining like Neil Peart. I enjoy hearing some slap just not overdone but then again i'm not a big fan of any bass solos within a band scenario. Dave -

Personally i'm not slagging of Slap in general. I am not a fan of some versions or types of slap. I like it in moderation is probably a better description of my taste. Like jazz or even lead guitarists there are those that think playing lots of fast notes no matter what style you play is a sign of competence. Its not for me if it doesn't have a catch, a tune, a melody to keep me interested. Dave -

Altho not a Mark King fan i've heard him play some very melodic slap bass and his traditional finger style is pretty impressive too. On the other hand i've heard him just play a lot of fast slap with no real meaning to it. That to me is just showing off for the sake of it. MK does some amazing things during a song. When he wanders off into ME, ME, ME solo stuff i get bored with him. Sadly he can show off far better than i could ever dream off. No matter what any bass player does it needs to have feel and groove or its just random hits. Dave -

You'll rue the day you did that Andy. I'd re-record it with "normal" bass playing -

Whereas i kinda like this one ok. Not 100% sure why i like this and not others. I find this more entertaining. -

I usually like what this guy does but this for me does nothing. There are moments where its good but generally "slap and pop as many notes as i can and as fast as i can" This is just an example and certainly not the worst i've heard. All i could find at short notice to show what i was talking about. From a technical point i guess he's good at what he's trying to do but just not for me. -

Nothing against it if used melodically and for the benefit of the song. I'm not a fan of rapid slap just for the sake of it. It needs to mean something and be tuneful. Its a bit like a drum solo, some drummers keep you entertained whereas others are just trying to hit fast and as many drums as possible which becomes boring. It needs to entertain me. I'm also not very good at it. Dave -

That's just good marketing. Promote and sell what's popular on the day. Have to say well done BD. Dave

Had a quick listen on YT to his other stuff and there's a definite talent going on. Can't quite say what makes it different but i think he has a very distinct voice. Saw him on YT playing Kashmir live and even that was an excellent version altho i'm not a huge Zep fan. I'll post on the What are you listening to thread. Dave

I'd never heard them before so had to google them and have now ordered the Toy Matinee album. Mate just told me there was a follow up called Third Matinee with Richard Page from Mister Mister. Had a quick listen to that as well and altho its a good album its not quite the same vibe as the Toy Matinee album. I might still buy the follow up. Dave

Never been a huge fan of Duran Duran. I was late listening to JT but girlfriends younger sisters raved about DD and i eventually got a listen to them and bought one of their albums. I was quite impressed with the bass. I then heard him with Power Station and that was when i really thought he was one of the better bassists out there. Afraid this lockdown clip is a bit boring but might pick up as he gets more into it. Remember Guy does a stand up comedy act as well so has an advantage there. Guys more natural. Dave

Aphrodite's Child was a Greek progressive rock band formed in 1967, by Vangelis Papathanassiou (keyboards, flutes), Demis Roussos (bass, acoustic and electric guitar, vocals), Loukas Sideras (drums and vocals), and Silver Koulouris (guitar). -

Yep. I'm getting a bit tired hearing about them all. I do subscribe to a few animal charities but its all money money money adverts on TV. If i gave to them all i would be destitute. Dave -

Think the fact Kim Mitchell was fiends with some of Rush did help tho. Just a very technically brilliant band who played some really nice but different songs. Not the usual dross from many of the bands back then. Dave -

Brilliant band. Was always surprised they weren't more popular. Saw them support Rush many moons ago and they were first class musicians and very entertaining to watch especially when they were just a support band. Dave
