I'm actually building two at the moment and I've already purchased the Kent Armstrong Hot Vintage P Bass Pickup Alnico for one of them, I've used this particular pickup before and they sound great, very much like the original Fender pickups.

For the other one, I might take a punt on the Maida Vale Low Rider Alnico 4, £19.95 posted isn't a lot of money to lose if I find it's not for me.

I went back to Reverb to purchase the Maida Vale Low Rider Alnico 4 and they are sold out. 😕

  3. I wanted an "all-in-one" solution, so I purchased the newly released Fender Rumble 800 2x10 Combo (not the "Stage" version), and I find it hard to believe that it only weighs 29 lbs. (13.15 kg), because it's definitely just a one-hand lift.

I'm not in a band at the moment so I've not gigged it yet, but I have used it for jam sessions with friends and it sounds great, and would probably be plenty loud enough on it's own without the need for an extension cab.

I'll save you the £8. It's a shadow of the former store. Stock is boring, expensive and uninspiring for a bassist.

    Fender/Squier/Jackson

    Ibanez

    Yamaha

    Sandberg

    Musicman/Sterling

    That's it.

    Totally agree!

I went to the Birmingham store around six months ago, I spent about ten minutes at the bass section, which as you say, is boring, expensive, and uninspiring, none of the staff could be bothered to ask if I needed any help, even though I was the only customer in the whole store at the time.

I went there with money in my pocket to spend, but came away very disappointed.

  6. I've wired quite a number of P basses over the years by following the instructions included with the pickups, or by searching online for wiring diagrams.

I'm practically minded and can turn my hand at a lot of things, but I'm not technically minded, so my question is:

Why are there so many variations when wiring a P bass?

There are only two wires coming from the pickup, and only two pots, and yet there seems to be a variety of ways to do it.

Here's an example of what I mean where the cap and wires are going to different lugs on the pots, etc.

Seem to recall this question came up a while ago.. What I've used are very cheap welding nozzle tip cleaner files, they come in little tin cases and are round section (not tapered) which is handy, unlike needle files that often are taper.

I've cut nuts from scratch with these, with a bit of time and patience.

Do you mean something like these?

  8. I don't want to spend between £75 and £100 for a set of specialist nut files to only use them once, so is there anything else I could use to slot a nut?

Although I guess that to do the job properly, then I would need the proper nut slotting files.

Alternatively, any idea how much it would cost to get a luthier to do the job for me?

    Thanks in advance.

I just don’t understand why you’d turn up, pretend to pick something up and then just leave!?

    Dude it’s your job!

That's what baffled me, he was a regular driver for my address, and he would know that I usually leave the porch door unlocked if I was expecting a delivery or collection, why he didn't bother walking down the steps to the door after actually driving down my driveway to my house, still mystifies me. 🤔

  10. Having just read mcnach's post about his displeasure with DPD, I thought I would share my experiences with them.

A couple of year's ago I ordered some expensive hi-fi separates, I received an email from DPD stating that my goods were delivered safely and successfully, so I went to my front door and was horrified to find nothing, it turned out that the driver had delivered my goods to a completely different address about half a mile away from where I live.

Luckily for me, the person who received my goods was honest enough to bring them round to my address, but he did say that all the boxes were left on his doorstep in full view of the general public, and had discovered them when he got home from work.

Fast forward to a couple of month's ago, I had a bass that needed returning to GuitarGuitar which was scheduled to be collected by DPD.

Despite the fact that I'm retired and would be home on the day of the scheduled collection, I had a bad feeling about this collection because of my previous experience with DPD, so I decided to set up my video camera in the front room looking out of the window, and I was so glad I did.

I was sitting in the back room when I received a notification stating that their driver had attempted to collect the bass, but reported that there was nothing to collect, there was no ring of the doorbell, or a knock on the front door, so I checked the video and what I saw was shocking, even by "dodgy courier" standards.

The video clearly shows the driver get out of his van, walk to the top of the steps that lead down to my front door, then stop, turn around and get back into his van and drive off.

I had left the bass in my front porch ready for collection, so if he had bothered to walk down the steps, he would have seen the bass sitting there because the porch has clear windows.

Obviously I reported this to DPD, and sent the video to them, but there was no apology, or offer of compensation, all they said was that they will attempt delivery the next day.

From now on, if I order anything online, I call the store first to ask which courier they use, and if they tell me it's DPD, then I won't order from them.

Lovely looking bass. I'm sure this will sell quickly.

Moreover, sorry to hear of your health issues. I hope you don't give up entirely.
Perhaps you could think about playing a Short scale, or even shorter? like some of the 26" scale basses around. Maybe even a Uke Bass?

I suggest this, because I once gave up for almost 25 years! And on returning to the world of bass playing....  I regretted giving it up before. Plus, I am so so glad I took it up again.

These days, there are a great many small, compact, and lightweight amps, cabs & heads out there too.
Whatever you decide - best of luck with it :)

Thanks for your kind words Marc, I will certainly carry on playing at home, and I think if a vacancy came up with a local band then I would probably consider it, but the thought of long trips to rehearsals and gigs just doesn’t appeal to me anymore.

Btw, I think the bass is practically sold now, just waiting for confirmation.
