1. 1991 Aria Pro II SLB-2 Bass 2mm, 3.5mm, 4mm I think it could be lower, so I'd say it's medium.
  2. Just bought a Kent Armstrong Jazz pickup from Mark. Fast delivery. Top man. Cheers Mark
  3.
It should be just a case of desoldering the old pickup and soldering in the new one. The only possible issue when mixing pickups from different manufacturers is that it's not always clear which pickup wire is the "hot" and which is the "ground" (they often use different colours on the wires). On a single pickup bass this is not an issue - either will be ok. On a dual pickup bass have a look at the wires on the new pickup and solder it the way that looks most obvious. Once in place, connect it all up and listen to the sound you get when BOTH pickups are on. If it sounds a little "thin" then you've wired the new pickup "out of phase" with the old one - all you then need do is open it up and swap the wires of the new pickup around and all will be ok.
Nice one, thanks. Rehearsal tonight so I might leave it til tomorrow. Edit: Just had a quick look. Looks like the current pickup has one red and one black wire, while the new one has one red and one white. I'll match up the red wire assuming that's the 'hot' one, yeah? Edit 2: Ah, according to Kent Armstrong's Schematic PDF, the white wire is the hot one! http://www.kentarmstrong.com/KA_Wiring_Instructions.pdf It looks like the wires from the current pickup just go to the selector switch. I just wire the new one exactly the same yeah?
  4. I just bought a Kent Armstrong Jazz Hot Vintage pickup from Mark (AHPOOK) and I'm just wondering if there's anything I need to know before installing it? The dimensions are exactly the same as the current pickup, so it just a case of desoldering the old and soldering in the new? Should I have any concerns with the volume and tone pots at all? Here's my Bass: Cheers
  5.
Just ordered the ER20's from DJM Music via ebay.... £7.70
Received this morning! Excellent.
  6. Herco picks are available on ebay at the moment. I just ordered some myself. I had one a while back, although I didn't know it was a Herco, until today. I saw them mentioned in another thread and googled them and realised that's the pick I've been after. Herco on Ebay

  10.
I don’t understand why people rehearse in small rooms, with the amps facing each other, and at full stage volume!! Surely that has to be unnecessary!
It wasn't my choice, plus our usual venue was booked up.
  11. I've come to realise that I need some earplugs after my 2nd rehearsal the other night in what was too small a room for a full band. My ears were ringing afterwards and it makes me feel awful. I remember my younger days in clubs and at live gigs. I always hated the thought of that ringing sound when I got home. So, earplugs. I can't afford the moulded sets just yet, but I want to get something. Should I get the Alpine MusicSafe Pro Earplugs, or the ACS ER20's? The ER20's are available in a smaller fitting, but how would I know if I happen to have a smaller ear canal? I was gonna just get the ER20's but read that the Alpines are more comfortable and more discreet.

    Greetings!

Just for the record, a few pics of my Bass:
  13.
It does sound to me that the string is making contact with the pole piece on the pickup. I do that sometimes because I dig in quite a lot and it results in a click/pop from the contact being made and the string doesn't ring cleanly, reducing the volume. You say you have moved the pickups away from the string. Try moving it further or just as a test, cover the pole pieces with a bit of electrical tape.
Yep, I reckon it's that. I'll check it out. Cheers
  14. 80's genius? Look no further than Crowded House. Awesome band. Tears For Fears are one of my faves, back then, and now. The 'Everybody Loves a Happy Ending' album of a few years back is great. Everybody Wants To Rule The World is one of my fave songs ever. I recall getting bored of some songs I liked back then, but I never got bored of that one, and I still don't. They were inspired by the bass line from Simple Minds' Waterfront and used it for Everybody Wants To Rule The World. Also, after not partaking in Live Aid, they contributed a sample of the drums from the The Hurting's title track to the Band Aid single. Listen and you can hear it at the beginning. Other top 80's bands, and faves of mine include Talk Talk, A-ha, Simple Minds, Simply Red's Picture Book was a cracking album, Del Amitri, FGTH, INXS, Propaganda, The The, Depeche Mode, and Talking Heads.
  15.
There are some DR strings which are designed for detuned basses. They don't loose their tension as much as regular strings when tuned down. Maybe they would help.
I'd never have thought detuning by a semitone would have an affect. Anyway, for the record, the E string is around 2.8mm above the 7th fret, 3mm above the 12th and just over 3mm above the 17th fret.
  16.
There's a few different things it could be. Try another bass into your amp to eliminate it from the equation. If it's an active bass have you checked your batteries?
It's not active, thanks.
Take the bridge up if the E string is too low. Are you detuning? Turn up the volume and "dig in" a less. Is the amp clipping? Turn the master up and the gain down.
I think the E string is pretty high as it is, but yes, I'm detuning to Eb. I don't think the amp is clipping. There is a clipping indicator on it to warn me. I'll try your other suggestions. Cheers
  17. Hi, Had my 2nd rehearsal last night with the U2 tribute act I joined last week. All went well, played 17 songs to last weeks 11. Not bad seeing as I only started playing bass again a few weeks ago. But, I've noticed something in the sound from my bass. When I play the A string I get a nice full, fat sound, but when I play the E string it kind of pops, or clips. Hard to describe, but the ultimate affect is that it is lower in volume than the A string. Is this the bass or the amp? I made some adjustments to the pups, taking the poles further away from the E string, about 4mm now, cos I thought that might be why it's popping. Other than that I really don't know what to do. It's not really, really bad, it's just a little something I've noticed. I don't think the other band members have noticed it. If I could sort it out, I'd be pleased. Any thoughts? Cheers.

    Which Squier?
Can you get to a shop to try them out? You don't need to buy them from that particular shop. I've been nothing but happy with my CV Jazz - love it to bits.
Yeah I can. It's just a question of time and I thought I'd get some opinion here first. Cheers
  19.
He also told me he has all the equipment from his minds days.
Not quite. I have one of his picks....somewhere. I can't find the bloody thing. Derek is probably the sole reason I play bass. Back in my late teens, I was a big Simple Minds fan and I was listening to New Gold Dream and other early Minds albums, but it was New Gold Dream and Derek's basslines that really turned me on to the bass. All the work he did with the band was brilliant. I never got to see him play with Simple Minds as he departed in '85 when I was only 15, but I did see him play in a band called The Flys in swindon in the 90's. I can't remember the exact year and I can find no record of this anywhere, but it definitely happened I swear! I wasn't that pissed! I bought a band t-shirt at the gig too. Anyway, I met him afterwards (and Brian McGee who was also in the band) and they signed my Chelsea Girl 7" and chatted about Simple Minds and even his stint in Propaganda. Derek told me that he used to play guitar and that he was better than Charlie (Burchill). He said that Propaganda sampled his bass for some of the Secret Wish tracks but he played live with them on stage. Before I left, he gave me a pick and told me it was a Simple Minds pick (nothing special about it, just that he'd used it in his Minds days). It was gold in colour and looked a little bit like these http://www.musiccorner.co.uk/Guitar-Shop-P...oduct_info.html but I'm not sure if it's the same. I used it myself rather than tucking inside the Chelsea Girl sleeve or something. It was a great pick as picks go and I haven't seen one like it since. Now I can't find mine anywhere! Great bassist is Derek. Top man.

    Which Squier?
A P will get you closer to Adams tone but a Jazz will also do the job IME and is easier to play (again IME).
Why exactly? The slimmer neck? Thanks

    Which Squier?
not to put any more choices in yer head, but id try a classic vibe jazz before i bought anything. with a jazz you can get a good approximation of a precision bass just by using the bridge pickup only. Plus you also have the two jazz pups to play with. I bought one several months back and im very pleased with it. Grand wazoo is selling some cv squires right now. one of them is the one i reccomended with seymour duncan pickups already installed.
CLassic Vibe Jazz? That's the white one yeah? Nice looking bass. Until I get a chance to try these out, what are the benefits that one might have over the other? Obviously, I can see that the Jaguar has both pup styles so I see that as an advantage. In terms of looks, I think the Jazz bas looks the nicest, followed by the Jag and then the Precision, only cos the Precision is such a common shape (well, I guess it is the daddy of basses isn't it?). At first, I didn't like the fretboard inlays, but I've come around to that too. Btw, what is the bass used in this clip? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ww8xC391Gc Starting at 43 seconds..... Is it a Jazz?

    Which Squier?
No need to worry about that one... it's sold!
Nice one. Did I reply to you? I think not. Sorry, but thanks for the message.
  23. Well, I'm probably getting ahead of myself and therefore won't be making a purchase just yet, but I am eyeing up a new bass. Before I joined the forum here, I'd shortlisted a jazz bass. I'm still a novice and the jazz has a slim neck. So, score 1 for the Squier VM Jazz. I like the natural finish 70's one and the black '77 one. Then, after I introduced myself here and said I has just joined a U2 tribute act, it was suggested I get a Precision. So, I've read tons of threads about Precisions and I'm now coming round to that idea. +1 for the VM Precision. I like the amber body one. The CV Precision is not one I'd heard about until I started looking around here. One member PM'd me about the one he was/is selling. Sounds nice, but I don't like the colour choices. Still, I wouldn't discount it completely. Lastly, the VM Jaguar rears it's beautiful head. I saw one in a guitar shop recently but didn't even pick it up. Now I know more about it, it could be the one for me. Jazz neck (I think, at least in measurements), Jazz and Precision pups and superb looks. All around the same price. I am bewildered. A good time to be buying a bass though huh?
  24. I'm thinking about the Squier Jaguar now. Jazz neck, J/P pickups. Nice.
