1.
Or a Yamaha BB414... or, if you like the reliced look, an LTD Vintage-204...
+1 for the Yammy The BB414 are excellent basses that have Yamaha's typical high end build quality and the P/J pickups are very smooth, hot and punchy and really gives that bluesy sound when strung with flatwounds. You can pick them up on here for under £200 easy, for me I wouldn't use anything else with a P/J config.
2. Right iv decided to give it ago myself! This is a big plunge since iv never tried anything remotely like this before =P One question I got though.... Whats the best way to strip a bass?
3. Yeh I know what you mean thanks for the tip for me I think steels are the way to go.
4. Thanks man thats a great website and i am fancying a set of Corelli 370's now. Yeh at the time I never thought about getting second hand and I was on a tight budget so I thought I would go for a budget upright, im not sure if I have shot myself in the foot now so I just hope that the repair, new string and a set up will bring it up to an ok standard.
5.
1. if the tailpiece wire was solid core steel then they are liable to snapping - the advantage of stranded steel wire is that you can tell if it's on the way out. I was advised to change by a luthier for just this reason. cost about a tenner. 2. yes, definitely! 3. yes, definitely! you should notice quite a big difference - really worth a try and you shouldn't be looking at much more than about £50 or so....
Just had a look and it was a stranded steel wire. Thats cool I will have a look at getting it setup properly, only thing is I also now need a set of new strings have you or anyone got any suggestions for a decent but not too pricey set?
6. I dont think I need a new tailpiece. And the tailpiece wire was a stainless steel wire already and it still snapped. Would it be worth taking it to a luthier and spending a bit more money getting it repaired with a better quality wire and set up properly? (I havnt had the bass set up before) Would it make much of a difference if I got it setup?
7. Thanks for that at least I know what strings I can get (when iv got my bass fixed).
8. Thanks for the advice Monday morning im going to be back on to them and see what I can do. Thanks again.
9.
Well we'd better give them some publicity!
Sounds like a plan lol. Now I just got to find out how much its gona cost for a set of new strings and to get the sound post reset.
10. Gear 4 Music thats who I bought it from.
11. Its a week out of its warranty and they basically said to me tough luck its your problem now. And thanks I will check it out now.
12.
Is it just the tailpiece cable that's snapped, or is there other damage? If it's just the cable, that should be an easy and cheap repair. As long as the soundpost is still in place, you may not even need to visit a luthier.
The sound post has moved with closer inspection. Is it worth spending the money on? coz I do have a fear that i will spend money on getting it sorted and something else going wrong with it like you know?
13. As promised here is the damage report.
14. Literally happened 20 mins ago I was playing finger style on my DB when I heard a huge crack and the bridge flew across my room where I found out the tail piece have ripped off the bottom of the bass. the strings are now also ruined and since I only payed £445 for it i dont think its even worth repairing. To be honest im not sure what to do can anyone help? Pictures to follow...
15. I been looking at some new Double Bass strings and iv noticed there are loads of different types but what is the different between Orchestral, Jazz, Hybrids, Slap/ Rock-A-Billy and Solo strings? Could someone explain them to me please? Thanks.
16. This is my current family (minus the RBX...its at a friends)
17. Elites for Roundwounds, Picato for Flatwounds and im going to test out a set of Status Hotwires.
18. Im looking to regenerate one of my old basses with a new paint job (along with a few upgrades), I live in Cardiff and I was wondering if anyone knew of someone who could do the job in or around Cardiff or the Vale? Thanks.
19.
For roundwounds I only use nickel. I've tried various SS but just prefer the sound of nickel for what I do, a touch softer and more organic if you know what I mean. I'd still suggest trying the hotwires or some other 'halfwound'. The only way to find out is to give them a go!
Ok cool thanks im gona get a set of Status Halfwounds and see what they are like thanks for the advice =]
20.
Sounds like you have the sound you like from the string you already use in which case I'd go for either the Elites or Picato if you want to play it safe. If you want to try something different give Status Hotwire half-wounds a go. I really like them, very smooth sounding and a similar to flats but with a bit more zing if you need it. You can get them here - http://www.status-graphite.com/.
Thanks for the suggestion im definitely going to check them out. I was thinking about going for a set of Elite nickel plated strings I heard they give a smoother sound with a bit of a zang have you had any experience with nickel plated string? or would you still suggest looking at the hotwires?
21. Im looking to restring my Yamaha TRB 5II, I like my basses to produce a smooth, phat, punchy tone with a bit of zing when its needed. Could anyone suggest any strings that could do the job on my kind of bass? Thanks.
22. As some of you may have noticed I have recently bought a Yamaha TRB 5II which I completely fallen in love with but I want to restring it for the sound I normally use and like. I like a smooth, phat and punchy sound with a little bit of zing when its needed. Can anyone help suggest what strings would be good for this? I was thinking about maybe some flatwounds (as I use them on my other basses) but I want to hear what you guys have to say first. Thanks.
23.
Sorry I meant prosteels (still daddario though) I like them, good bright aggressive tone. Life isn't bad either
I might check them out to be honest im looking for something less aggressive but not as smooth as flat wound strings.
