1. Having lived through the rise and fall of the Beatles and played bass through most of that time too, I was literally gobsmacked and jaw dropped when the remastered versions on digital media started coming out. Played on fine equipment I heard the bassline properly for the first time and was amazed at what I'd missed before. He was doing that stuff before many people and, although contemporaneous with James Jamerson, in my mind he has a lighter and more lyrical touch. He also had control of what he played to a greater extent. Jamerson didn't write the songs and so had a melody and chord chart to work from for ideas, Macca often had to come up with all of it. As has been noted already Penny Lane and Something alone would put him in the upper echelons of 60's bass players. And Come together (mashes nicely with Footprints which I suspect is where the bassline came from... ) Yup, He's not underrated here...
  2.
I regularly play 'Gimme some Loving', 'I Wish', 'Superstition','Hard to Handle','Knock on Wood' and 'Sex Machine'.I play 'Do I Do' a lot aswell. I also play 'Funk Music' but that's with a different band
Ha ha yep. That's a conversation I have a lot
  3. Thought some of those are in the "Compulsory Figures" for pub funk bands Youtube will turn up versions of all of those played by various people. You probably need to concentrate on the versions they have listed though as some vary a lot. Here's a few I like Too 'ard to 'andle Quite like the Grateful Dead's little kick in the chord figure.. Stevie Ray Vaughn's version of Superstition is a pub rock standard but Stevland's on Sesame Street is good and the bass is on a bass and not a keyboard ... Better bass line than on the record too but you may find raised eyebrows in the band if they want the very simple orginal version. If you are lucky your lot will play it in E rather than Eb The Jackons do a good version of It's your thing, if a tad slow for live. I play that in my funk band (but on baritone sax) If you have any say in it I'd say keep it as short as you can. Civilians loose the plot pretty fast on semi-obscure funk tunes with no obvious chord progressions and no words, unless the whole room is really bopping.... They are all great fun to play on bass and, of course, you are the Main Man in keeping those backsides moving ...
  4. "The bass has a replacement value of £3000 (that is, it is around what you would pay to have a bass hand-built to this standard)," Never heard of Jon Shuker then
  5. Her videos (not live, mind) show a guy with a light blue Spector (?) with frets but the bass lines all sound 'orrible
  6. It was certainly one of the tunes in an ancient thread about bass lines that were played on a keyboard rather than a bass...
  7. The full gallery is just a PM away This is a non-export 2005 JB62RI Crafted in Japan CIJ Fender Jazz bass, 1962 Re-issue in "US Gunmetal Blue" with a black scratchplate and rosewood fingerboard. Basswood body, Japanese pickups and hardware. 3 knobs, earth strap and headstock strap peg in the style of the later 62 Jazz. Owners manual and orginal guarantee slip (in Japanese) Weight is 8lbs; Nut is 38mm It has a few dinks and scratches but nothing that shows much and a reasonable padded Fender gig bag that needs a little gaffa or maybe a stitch or two I'm looking for £475 plus post from Cardiff. Sorry, I'm not looking for exchanges.

  10.
Jon tells me the white EMG P5 pickup has arrived at last I'm fixing up a trip to Shukerville in about a week's time to bring my new baby home. I hope everything will be all white!
With East P preamp?
  11.
Here's a video which illustrates the contrast between a 'VI, and a P: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ihk4Jp5yO4g
The Fender VI is definitely a "Crazy Guitar"
  12.
Give a guitarist, any guitarist, a bass guitar, and he can play Mustang Sally in five minutes. Give a guitarist a proper bass and... it wouldn't be pretty. It's a guitar.
Actually, having struggled for at least 4 years now to play EUB reasonably, give many bass guitarists a double bass to play Mustang Sally on and it would still be fairly ugly ....
  13.
The big 1200 watts rig driven by my Wal (see profile for details):
Nice rig .... Like the flip chart for the drummer... What does it say on it?

  15.
I trust you noticed the " "? Thing is, KevinJazzBass asked a specific question about value, and like it or not, "collecty" people are very anal about such things & screwholes, covers, non-original parts and all that sort of thing will devalue it. That's just a symptom of the fact that these were sold as cheapos back in the day & most have been modded, trashed or worse by now. On the subject, I'm inclined to think the black undrilled scratchplate wasn't original - I think JV Jazzes would have come with drilled plates & undrilled bodies. Obviously I haven't seen 'em all (and Js seem much less common than Ps) so there might be exceptions. J.
Yup I expect you are right. The three JV P's I've had all had cover holes in the plates, but not in the bodies
Trust me pete i am this 3rd band ive got lined up are really similar to RWS so im feeling a bit more hopefull about it ill keep you posted! I know freaking tell me about it the guy had time to write on my wall but not to turn his f***ing phone on and call me to let me know, some people just infuriate me...
Remember way back when you were worried about auditioning and I said
Oh and another thing, judging by many posts on here about unreliable musicians, if you show up at all you'll be the exception If you show up at the agreed time (or just before), with working gear, working ears and a good attitude you'll be a long way ahead ...
Now you know what I was on about .....
  19.
Take off your drilled scratchplate & countersink the screwholes from the back. Then get some suitably small countersunk-headed machine screws & nuts, and attach the pup cover from behind, with the nuts on the front. This is how thumbrests were sometimes attached on JapCrap copies. You'll have to take off your strings & thread them under the cover to put it all back together. Alternatively if you don't give a sh!t about the value of your bass, do this: Jon.
Jon No one will think any the less of a JV jazz for having screw holes where a proper Fender pickup cover was fitted. It's not like sticking an extra thumb rest on or strap peg in the wrong place or routing it for a different bridge. In fact sell it with the covers and it will probably be worth £20 more. Oh, PS: Nice fix idea too.

  21.
Check out my youtube channel below, i've got a great live track of Prince's in my favourites, a great example of how slapbass doesn't have to be the central part of a song or arrangement. Youtube channel link in my signature (video is called jay leno 02")
Yeah Yolanda ..... I agree, a tastefully applied small amount of slap can add to a tune, too much can spoil it. IMHO Mark King is in a different department totally as he is playing the instrument as tuned percussion. That video is nice but really I think you just wanted us to read the latest comment on your channel: " lodinsen (2 weeks ago) you're hot! "
