1. I use iTunes and check out 30 sec samples before buying. Sometimes I'll find a few tracks I like and am willing to pay for, I'll then buy the whole album. My logic is that if I like more than a few songs, then I'll like or learn to like the rest of the album. It's just a bit disappointing considering how awesome a few of their songs are. On the topic of studio stuff, I like the Lettuce material, but am not that keen or impressed with the production on Outta Here. Everything feels a bit subdued and quiet.
2. I also bought the 'Very Best of Tower of Power' and I gotta admit... not that fussed about the rest of their repertoire. I really love 'What is Hip?', but very few others have that level of an infectious groove. The rest of the tracks feel very cheesy... Disappointed.
3. I never got the chance to play this one, but given that my own Klimt has replaced every other instrument I own, I have no doubt that this is a peerless bass.
4. Just bought 'Lettuce - Outta Here' album and am really digging their stuff. The title track and 'Squadlive' are ridiculously in the pocket.
5. I believe it is a synth too. Although I believe there was/is a video of a teenager playing that Speed Demon lick actually on the bass.
6. Guthrie Govan's 'Erotic Cakes' album. Started with the main heads/phrases of most of the songs (few of them I'm not too fussed about), then my favourite licks, and now moving to some of the solos.
7. I really do like the unit. Even if I am not using the headphone out I insist on using this as my own DI whenever playing live. Just so clean and crisp.
8. Good point. This is why I practice through a transparent preamp into flat sounding headphones so I can hear the actual sound of my bass. I then have a rig that is designed to have a flat frequency response (DSP and slight compression to contribute towards what is meant to be a true representation of your bass). For others, they could easily do the headphones to check the sound they are actually getting from the bass (Bass - check!). They could then take headphone out from their amp and check what they're getting from that (Amp + Bass - check). And then they can plug the bass into the amp into the cab and hear the total sum (Cab + Amp + Bass - check).
9.
TC Electronic Combos: Just discovered that by removing one screw you can slot any of the TCE Amps in there should you want to swap them about or even just take the amp someplace
That is EXACTLY what I wanted to know The option to remove the head for separate transport should be a standard feature if all they've done is just ram a RH/Classic/Staccato head in a speaker housing.
10. A topic of discussion came up on TalkBass regarding particular cabs and their characteristics, and someone stated that if you have to eq your amp to get the sound you want (and not because of the room), then you've got the wrong cab. In essence, buy the cab that sounds the way you want it to when set flat (assuming the bass is not the issue of course). Mark
11. I wish I could say I enjoy this waiting game! Bump
12. Indeed! Keep your eyes peeled - there are some real bargains to be had, particularly at the moment. It's a buyer's market.
13. Like WoT I've owned and played through both Schroeder and Berg. Personally, I really liked the sound and tone of my basses through Schroeders. They are small, light, loud, cut through almost anything, clean sound with a clean amp. Slightly more aggressive sounding than the average cab, which I liked. I switched to Berg because I wanted something with a more extended frequency range, and super portable. The Berg IP112 is designed to do both. It has a thicker, more solid bottom end than the Schroeder and fills a room very evenly. Try them both out, as they really are quite different cabs. The Schroeder's have quite a unique character to them - if you like them then a Berg won't quite get that sound. If you prefer the Berg sound, you'll struggle to get that out of a Schroeder without radical eqing.
14. Fantastically thanks The headphone amp on this thing is crystal clear. Works beautifully with my q-Jays. Fantastic for both home practice with an auxiliary source (like mp3/drum machine, etc) and also at practice/gigs for use with a monitor signal. The sound engineers also love the totally continuous level control on the DI out (separate level controls for bass amp out and DI out). Love it. SFX do a product that is just the headphone amp portion - it's called the H1. Great price and very pure sound. It'll show you what your bass is really like. Mark P.S. For those multi-instrumentalists, it's also great for acoustic and electric guitar, and I imagine it'd be great for keyboards and other instruments too!
15. Fair enough. I couldn't stomach one at full price.
16. Given the amount of buzz about these amps, I would be incredibly surprised if this is still here by lunchtime. Bump for BB2000. Bought from him when I first joined BC and would highly recommend him as a seller. Mark
17. Berg Ip112... good on you! Stellar amp and worth trading for. I did virtually the same thing too. Best of luck getting a hold of one!
18. SFX Sound SFX also show their work on the forum. Here's a LINK to the particular post in the main thread that shows my custom device. Feel free to email Max at SFX Sound to discuss this as an option. He is very happy to discuss your needs, and is uber-prompt at replying to emails. Also, whilst I won't discuss price here, their prices even for custom jobs like mine are extremely agreeable. Also feel free to PM me if you want any more info on my device, though speaking to them directly would be your best bet Mark
19. Well, if you're still not decided on one, might I suggest the SFX Sound m:D2. it is remarkably similar (almost identical!) to an Avalon U5 in terms of sound quality and purity. I've got that same circuit built into my custom jobbie from them. It will take time to be built (1-2 months total depending on where in the build cycle you jump in) but if you got something cheap to tide you over til then, you wouldn't be disappointed. Mark
20. You running an active bass? I found my passive Geddy didn't have enough of a signal to drive the power amp.
21. What are you using Toasted?
22. Fantastic Toasted! Pleased to hear you managed to get a hold of the IP stack.
23.
I make do with one valve amp for guitar and er.....7 guitars...!
AH-HAH! I knew someone on BC would help to illustrate the plight of a guitarist
24. Is there a thread on BC about how much we estimate each of our respective gear collections to total? I itemised my gear (inclusive of guitar) the other day, but was too scared to add it up.
25. I'm actually a guitarist as well, but I took it up after bass and it has almost always taken second place to bass. Bass helped me to adopt and maintain a 'simpler is better' approach, and only to change or add to my setup when I found I was 'hearing' something that could only be achieved by modifying my setup.
