1.
Not sure how much I'd agree with the pensioners playing In my opinion, the whole of Shine On is a pinnacle of human musical achievement. It moves me unlike another other piece I have ever heard. The feel, technique and skill is outstanding. Waters' bass playing on records at least is ideal for the music. His tone is the classic pick-flats Precision tone. Have A Cigar is the best example from the top of my head!
When I said pensioners, I was making a tongue in cheek reference to how slow and delicate the music was. And I would be inclined to agree with you about the pinnacle of human musical achievement, had I not heard Gates of Delirium by Yes. But anyway, let's not send this off on a tangent. Apparently Dave did play a lot of the bass parts when recording, as he could get them down in a lot less time then Roger (something we've yet to have Roger confirm himself, and like that would ever happen) - but listening to any live recordings, and you can hear he's competent enough for everyone to assume he played on the albums.
2. I've always loved Roger's style. No flash, just the right notes at the right time. I guess that's the unintentional Pink Floyd ethos. Listen to the outro of Shine on Wish You Were Here. It sounds like a bunch of pensioners playing, but the way it makes you feel in indescribable.
3. For any fusion/Holdsworth fans. Soft Machine are definitely a good gateway into jazz.
4.
Anyone seen these guys from Japan? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYKVvysl-Mo
This is absolutely effing amazing! Thank you for introducing this to me! YES!
5. They already exist. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BH11YFqMoB0...feature=related Though if I were to be picky: Guitar 1: Steve Howe Guitar 2: Allan Holdsworth Bass: Chris Squire Drums: Thomas Pridgen Keys: Eldar Djangirov Sax: Roland Kirk Vox: Cedric Bixler-Zavala BAMM!

7. I think the generic issue surrounding this is as follows: To the majority of us polite, generally middle class musicians, telling someone straight up that what they're doing us wrong or not good enough would be akin to emasculating them. So we instead usually go for subtle hints at most, usually by saying something along the lines of 'Oh could you try doing something like this.. oh you should try practicing it at home' etc Then, if the musician in question continues to be less then what we'd deem satisfactory, instead of tackling the issue head on, we'd slowly build a resentment towards them until saying 'Right, that's it!' and then awkwardly dismissing them (usually impersonally and from a distance) instead of sorting out the problem in the first place and giving them time to improve. Dealing with a problem as soon as it arises is the best way of avoiding these awkward dismissals, but we're all just too goddamn polite to do it.
8.
I think for me there was a much bigger sound from stevies band, which is obviously because he had more members. Also stevies songs are far more summery than jamiroquais so it just suited the mood better. Although having said this the quality of the sound of Jamiroquai was unbelievable for a live show.
Yeah, I completely agree, Jamiroquai didn't seem to be sonically 'present' enough if you see what I mean. Excellent show though, first time seeing them after being a fan for about 6ish years so I was pretty starstruck. And sorry Bubinga, no vids, the phone I'm using at the moment predates the dinosaurs, but I was about 10 rows back(ish) so pretty close.
9. Anyone see them supporting Stevie at Hyde Park? If so, congratulations, you're on the cover. I was there =)
10. As far as I've seen, you're not going to get a better price then the Guitar Amp and Keyboard center in Brighton. www.gak.co.uk I got my lovely USA Jazz from there, and I don't think I ever walked past there without going in to gawp at the Fender section.
11. Hah! I automatically misread that as feminist orange. Beautiful instrument though, good luck with the sale.
12. This is probably one of the meanest intro bass solos around, especially in the context; Juan Aldrete is a beast. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TB_fi1fB3k Watch the second part as well if you want a blinding bongo solo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4ov7UZt4K4...feature=related I know the Mars Volta aren't everyone's brand, but keep an open mind.
13. Now that's a bass you can really cownt on. Good mod as well, lucky you didn't burger it up in the process. Thank you.
