1. There are dirty mods for them, fairly sure will apply to bass one as well as guitar ones. They'll drive if you put some boost into them.
2. A vintage amp that is fixed right won't need much maintenance, its just there are a lot of bodgers about, and a lot of people too tight to pay for a proper job to start with. My Hiwatt is still on pretty much all its original parts aside from someone beat me to having all the nice valves out of it.
3.
Sounds good, although the big barefaced for dirt a bit OTT??? no?
Its much lighter than my other options of guitar cabs. Plus it isn't for dirt, its for a whole guitar worth of sound, both rigs aren't necessarily playing at once.
4.
No idea what a 70's Hiwatt bass amp would cost today, but it would be the one I'd look at if I was interested in that sort of thing.
I'm after £1100 for my 70s 200w PA, does fine for bass, didn't want to carve it up to make a bass head of it, probably get cheaper if someone actually wants to sell it, rather than tokenly putting it up for sale to justify having it about.
5. And the bias adjustment. Aside from the internal similarities.
6. Barefaced for looks, vox for tone. Actually the Vox was another bands, my rig is a guitar head and a bass head into separate cabs, my bass has separate outputs for its pickups, so I cover guitar and bass area, and balance them with volumes, and do all sorts of feedback tricks with them.
7.
Taiwan..? Really?
Compare with the back panel pics on the Weber site, which I can't link to properly. Plus the toroidal PT and drop through OT layout, stuff not in common with Hiwatt. Different amps, but looks to be same builder.
8.
Or a Mywatt... http://weber-amps.de/en/index.html
Have a look at the pics of the Mywatt 200 and a look at some pics of the Smarvo valve amps, like the Ashton ones.
9. Been on the phone to them recently, an ebayer won a vintage Hiwatt PA from me but didn't pay up, so I got their contact details from ebay, an interestingly got through to Hiwatt/Hylight. In unrelated, I heard at one point they had owners in common with Music Ground. Anyway, much better off getting a proper Hiwatt than a modern repro one. New ones are just another standard amp with an expensive name badge.
10.
A Barefaced 4x15 setup must be a sight and sound to behold
11.
Two super 15s? That's just plain rude....
One's a Vintage, near enough.
12. I pictured it weird.
13.
If you put coppr foil or tape uner the pots, it will be earthed by the pots surely, so theres no need to solder to it. As for slugs, I tried wire and it didnt work, even tried putting a slug inside a circle of it, but it still got out. This year I,ll be trying 2 wires half an inch apart with an aa battey connected between. anybody tried that one ?
Shorting the batter with copper wire will run it out fairly quickly, need a resistor involved. Also its the joints between the copper pieces that need soldering, just in enough places its all connected, don't need to do whole seams.
14. Graphite paint needs three coats or so.
15. Do your EQ with the guitarist playing.
16. Guess some people take how many ebay rules they can break as a challenge: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tokai-Rockinbetter-/181074106356?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item2a28db97f4
17. I often think the change of pot that tends to go with the change of cap is the thing that makes the major difference.
18.
'Don't bother, get a Matamp'
Good call.
19. Barefaced Vintage would be ideal if you can find one.
20. My W horn cab can be turned into a boat by undoing 10 bolts.
21. ^this guy is feeling lucky then.
22. Is that a 6 string, or only 5?
23. Steve Wishnevsky of Wishbass has been making a crude version he calls a quinn.
24.
James Lomenzo from Ashdown is a great pedal. I just got one, and it has a lot of versatility to it.
+1 on this, I think these should be the default bass overdrive choice.
25. Classical anything, especially piano, would give me all the music reading and theory I would be a much better musician with but can't really be bothered to learn properly. All the notes just laid out there, be good for writing.
