  1. Just got in from a Spacewasters gig at The 100 Club in London, supporting King Kurt & The Polecats.

Used my JMJ Mustang into my Ashdown RM500v2 into whatever the cab that was there was.

Doors opened 7:30, we were on at 8:00 and for that time not a bad sized crowd at all. Played well and got some very good applause. Was nice to be on a big stage again, especially now we’re a 5-piece.

One of the guitarists sadly broke 2 strings (at separate times) so we had to change things about a bit (they both work in London so only had one guitar each as had come from work) a bit disconcerting for me as I then ended up doing half lead vocals on a song which ain’t my bag, but the show must go on.

Nice & easy trip home too which made for an all round good gig.

The audience has to earn an encore.

Tell them it's the last song and then stop. Bass comes off and is put onto stand, if there's no immediate shouting for more. Then the amp goes off.

I've seen a few bands hovering around expecting to be asked to play more. It's not a good look.

I’ve always thought that too. There’s also the thought that if they’re not asking for more it might be cos they don’t want it.

  3. So given I appear to be developing arthritis in the knuckle on the thumb on my left (fretting) hand I’ve noticed playing my JMJ Mustangs a tad painful at times. So tried out my backup Squier CV60s Mustang a lot over the weekend, found the slimmer Jazz width neck much better for this so today picked up a Made In Japan Fender Mustang to be my main gigging bass. Have to put a set of Elixirs on it as it currently has Labella Mustang Flats which aren’t my thing. First impressions are a really nice bass with a very comfortable to play neck.

  4. I really like the idea of the cab-sim DI, great get a really near approximation of your on-stage sound through FOH. Am assuming Ashdown have voiced it like their own cabs (which I really like).

I was going to start a new thread, but thought I would post on this one instead.
I was back at the docs yesterday with yet more arthritis woes, turns out I have a rare inflammatory/autoimmune disorder that can lead to all sorts of problems including deafness, blindness and breathing problems in its worse extreme cases, I am hoping my doc will manage it so I don’t get that bad.
I am now fairly desperate to get back in a band and enjoy playing with other musicians again while I still can, but I would need help to load in and out my gear, unless it was a straight to PA preamp setup, as well as 100% need to sit down to play on a tall stool. At least if there was a band van we could use my park anywhere blue badge lol. I would probably struggle with travelling due to pain levels associated with travelling, but for now I think it would be worth it just to get back on stage again.
so would you have a disabled bassist in your band that needed help with his gear?

In my band we have me who can hardly carry anything due to back issues and our singer - who was also was our guitarist - sadly had to have the lower half of his right leg amputated following a motorbike accident, so we`ve two in a band of five that aren`t able to carry much. We get by, though being an originals band we seldom have to carry a lot of gear.

Thanks. I've put a new set of D'Addario EXL160M 50-105 nickel rounds on my MIJ Mustang. Already the tension feels better with the clacky flats off, especially on the E. The necks on these are ridiculous, so fast & easy, especially when combined with the reduced finger stretch of SS & Jazz nut. I like it a lot but the acid test will come when I stand and actually play it properly, and discover if I can deal with the lack of body & arm contours. Just a few mins standing at home with it strapped on, and I really miss the P bass arm contour particularly. I've never really even thought about the fact that it exists on a P body, until I play a bass without one. It's whether I can adjust hand positioning comfortably enough and get used to it, as playing with the slab body digging into my right wrist isn't much fun the way I'm used to playing.

The neck is fantastic but time will tell if I can deal with the slab body. Am I right in thinking that the only Mustangs with a body contour are the 70s competition ones, and the current Vintera II 70s comp reissue ones? I can clearly see they have a body contour but can't make out from the pics if they also have an arm contour. Do they? I guess some people like the go-faster stripe, but I have to say I'm not one of them. Does a Mustang with body & arm contours and no stripe exist? @Lozz196 I guess you've adjusted ok to the lack of contours on the JMJ?

I never notice it until I read about it, and even then I went and checked my JMJ to make sure. Could be something to do with being a pick player I suppose, or that in general I`m a non-noticer.

  7. I must admit I read of these incidents and thank my lucky stars yet again that in the bands/scene I`m in these don`t seem to happen. Possibly the bands and audiences together would protest a little too forcefully (and I really wouldn`t want some of those characters giving me a Paddington stare).

  8. I’ve only depped for one band. The bassist sent me the set list, I learnt it, got to rehearsal and half the songs I’d learned were no longer being played. On the other half on two songs I was expected to play rhythm guitar (which as I can was no bother) both of which were played a half step down. I did it but never again, last minute dot com don’t live in this body.

  9. Fender have changed the voicing on their pickups over the years, the mid/late 90s ones to me have a thicker more balanced sound than the early 200s which followed, which I find to be toppier and more modern sounding. Plus - and contentious to some - I’ve always found that maple necked basses of the same type & series have a brighter sound anyway.
