1. The biggest missed opportunity bass wise will always be the graphite necked Flea Ray
2. But he was playing in California one night , russia the next!
3. Nice to see your perfect gig for the white GB Russ too, you must be the busiest bass player already, I don't know how you will find any spare dates! Wish I was good enough to pick up your deps
4. If you are going to look inside then the first place to look is the earth connections both incoming and through to the input jack socket, if your not sure what you are doing let someone else fix it anyway
5. Nobody got any chalk puns then?
6. My 2002 hardly moved in ten years, Classic and pre were sealed other than where my 79 was worn through to the wood, awesome bass.
7. The neck profiles are chalk and cheese.
8. Gedo are the best company I have ever dealt with, brilliant service
9.
I reckon my 82 Stingray is only just over 8lbs in weight. It's a lovely bass to play and feels incredibly comfortable with a lovely narrow neck too. In many respects, its quite difficult to believe that the pre-EB's are related to the post EB's as they are completely different beasts.
I agree with this because here is a list of bass parts that are not the same as a new Ray, some of which are nearer to a modern P bass than a new Stingray (especially before the Classic was released). Neck- Different profile/finish/and truss method. Body- Different with no contours. Pickup- Wound differently longer pole pieces. Preamp- Meant to be the same as the last MM one but I am not so sure and different to an earlier pre EB anyway. Bridge- Muted and strung through with more mass. Frets- Different gauge. Neck bolts 3 or 4 vs 6. Scratchplate has no notch for the truss wheel (cosmetic only) So what are we left with? Tuners. I fail to see how people can say they are the same other than the year they were built.
10.
I would go for a new classic and effectively have the best of both worlds, pre ebmm styling and bridge, a tad thinner neck, 2band eq but improved build quality, thats my humble.....
This is what I had to do to get what is in effect a 5 string pre EB Stingray, the Ray 5 should have looked like that in '87 anyway IMO, I have a Silohuette guitar (OLP copy I must admit) and my normal SR5s should really have been called Silohuette basses but I guess people knew the name Stingray and most probably still are not aware of the Silohuette at all?
11. I get what your saying Dingus, how or why makes little sense though unless the new 2 eq is different to the ones from the 80s up until the modern pcb ones went in?
12.
My 2010/11 whatever it is Musicman HH Stingray has the best 'single H' Musicman bass tone I've ever heard. It is EVERYTHING I craved with a Musicman, and more. 3EQ as well. Pete - I'm shocked you've had to go for a different pre.... My Musicman 5 HS has such a good tight low B its unreal...and for the price I paid a few years back I'm very happy. You could go all out and get a Bongo. It will blow your mind.
The 79 I had would blow away any new Ray I have tried, much more thump on the bottom end but with much more cutting bite on the treble pot if needed, the standard 2 band in my classic was as dull as dish water.
13. I remember how good this bass sounds with flats on it, epic
14. Too late, the 2 EQ is in now I just fancied keeping it sort of normal and I have my other rays for three band fun. Still tinkering at the moment but I will update once I get a better idea of it.
15. Well mine has the East preamp now, only done one gig with it since with no practice before at all so I'm still experimenting with it, so far so good although I reckon its probably got more of the one trick pony stingray sound some people think of compared to my 3 eq and pickup selectable Ray 5s. Its a beautiful bass though so I'm hoping I can get it sorted, pickup height might be too high now and I think I need to be more subtle with the east preamp compared to the stock one, practice on thursday to fettle a bit.
16. The audience are of no importance to me regarding my personal bass though, if the OP has a hankering for a pre EB then no amount of EBMMs will cure the hankering, that unfortunatley is the nature of hankering I had an occasion where the jumped up kids from another band were laughing at my Stingray copy (as they had obviously lusted over EBMM ones online or in shops and recognised the wrong logo etc) after the gig one of their older friends who knew me walked right past them in the green room straight over to me "f***ing hell is that a proper pre Ernie Ball Stingray!" the look on the bass players face was priceless when the rest of his band looked at him after they had listened to him rant on all night with his expert knowledge on my fake Stingray
17. I am loving the upright bass and have enjoyed a few of the clips on your youtube link philparker, thanks
18. Even the best true bypass tuners can still alter your signal imo, tuner out for the win
19.
I would struggle to understand why anyone would pay silly amounts for a pre-ernie ball Musicman over the new Musicman Classic series, unless they were a collector. (may as well start the ruck )
There isn't much in them price wise but the pre eb will at least hold its value or maybe go up, the new ones have not got the thump of the old ones which may be down to the pickup pole piece lengths or the windings?
20.
I can honestly say that the only Stingray I've played that was a disappointment was a pre-EB MM. And I've played a lot of Stingrays.
Where as I own three ebmm ones right now and I had another before plus two pre eb rays, both the pre eb ones played and sounded better than all the ebmm ones I have owned or played. My Classic 5 is the best as far build quality goes but I have had to fit a john east 2 band preamp in it as the factory one was naff even though its meant to be just like a pre eb one, its still not perfect though and might end up with a new pickup too!
21. I don't think I own anything British bass wise? Hang on John east preamp in my classic ray! All the bits are probably Chinese though.
22.
We all bought fenders... didn't we?
Nope
23. Exactly so I prefer to just buy the ones I like, I would have anything from anywhere really
