  1. First impressions: The Alien is much louder, acoustically, than the Kingman I have. Still not really that loud, but noticeably different. Played using the soundhole as a thumb rest, it sounds really quite upright-like, but this doesn't translate that well into amplified sound. However, the Prefix Plus system needs some fiddling time, so I may yet improve on that. The long thumb rest is positioned about as far from the strings as a Precision bass pickup cover would be, which for me is too far out. I'll see if Warwick can advise on removing it. Out of the box, the setup was really nice. It has the Just-A-Nut III, so everything can be fettled really nicely. The neck is a nice round handful without being in any way a baseball bat. fretwork is excellent. Now, back to playing it!
  2. Just my two cents: I have a Kingman, which is very nice but quiet acoustically. However, the Warwick Alien I've just got is much louder. However, while it might keep up with a quiet acoustic on its own, there's no such instrument other than an Earthwood that could actually do an unamped acoustic gig. The comment about the Ozark being horrible and middy is true, but times have moved on, and that's far from the norm these days. Both mine, played clean through headphones and a Tascam Bass Trainer, can sound very good, and different to an electric. That difference will be less through stage amps or PA. So the only real choice is over the look of the thing. If that's really all it is, then go cheap!
  3. Ah, no. Much as I'd love another fretless, I doubt I have the skills any longer...
  4. Yer tiz. [attachment=136774:Dsc00090.jpg] [attachment=136775:Dsc00091.jpg] [attachment=136776:Dsc00092.jpg] [attachment=136777:Dsc00094.jpg] [attachment=136778:Dsc00095.jpg] I likes it!
  5. It's here. And it's not a Rockbass... Photos soon!
  6. It's nearly here...
  7. Ouch, that's an expensive hobby!
  8. Checking carefully through the Warwick web site, I find that ALL Aliens are now made in China. There are three models, Alien Standard, Alien Deluxe, and Warwick Alien. The Warwick Alien is the one with the Florentine cutaway and long thumb rest, and that's the one pictured on the prize draw posting. So here's hoping!
  9. Pics, yes. Sound samples and vids? No. I'd never live it down...
  10. Used it exclusively at a big gig last night - was great!
  11. As far as I can tell, it's probably a Rockbass. I really don't mind!
  12. My son has my camera...more pics in a few days! My phone's not up to it...
  13. Yup, definitely somewhere I'll return to.
  14. And Steve, "not completely accurate".? Not remotely accurate would be better. However, if it weren't for the relic job, I'd be interested!
  15. Contents: Bpdy, pickguard and controls from Squier Affinity P-J. Add: One 2006 MIM P neck, one Celinder/Armstrong P pickup, and one Wizaed 64 Jazz bridge pickup. Retstring with TI Jazz Flats, and fettle. Voila! [attachment=136442:20130607_152258.jpg]
  16. To say I'm chuffed is somewhat of an understatement!
  17. Well the previously mentioned Squier P-J is one new one. Ridiculously good for the money. Then today I read the email. "Conratulations..." Oh, here we go... "You have won the prize draw for the Warwick Alien acoustic bass on Facebook" I suppose Facebook had to be good for something!
  18. And, wow! See expanded NBD about to hit the basses thread!
  19. Ok, having had a few hours to spare a bit too close to Denmark Street, I bought a Squier Affinity P-J. I intend to mix and match parts with the Plexiglass P to make myself a P-J version of my go-to Precision. The kudos? Wunjo's Bass Centre. Endlessly helpful nice people who cared for a customer who wasn't spending lots, yet without asking, gave him the best possible deal. In my opinion, it rarely gets better than that.
  20. Particularly interested in trade for a Yamaha BB424.
  21. Flats on P and Mustang. However, went back to bronze rounds on the Kingman.
  22. And be very lucky to find one!
  23. Played at a wedding in a country pub on Saturday. Great fun, a lot if friends there, and support from a 3-piece acoustic band of violin (5-string,), guitar, and on squeeze box and spoons, Mr Geoff Lakeman, father of Seth!
