1. The Rock n Roll Outlaws played their final pub gig tonight at the Courthouse Bar in Lifton, Devon. Ticketed, so reasonable pay, plus we were given a whip-round! Very enjoyable, and a bit sad too. Final gig at the Wharf in Tavistock in two weeks!
2. Thanks, will be going to one of these guys as soon as I've got the setup done. Much appreciated!
3.
The classic poor B manifests itself as a poor flubby D note on the B string ...and poor sustain.... more double bass than electric bass.
Well, my £246 Squier P5 with standard gauge Chromes has a great B by that definition!
4. I am doing a NYE gig with a pop/party band this year, and the fiver is the bass for it. Hard work, learning a (sort of) new instrument, and learning to play Le Freak on it!
5.
That's one Badass comment....!
6. Seriously though, I'm trying very hard to use the amp power and touch the bass very lightly. This is roughly what Leo had in mind, that you put very little effort into plucking. It sounds far more upright-like, particularly with a well run-in set of TI Jazz Flats.
7. My choice? Sonic blue. ...I'll get me coat.
8. I had one of these also. Fabulous Precision. Should never have let it go. Actually found a pic of it the other day...
9. Can anyone recommend a teacher in this area? Doesn't have to be *that* close, anywhere in an hour or so's drive.
10. You could build such a small amp, but not for the same price for bass. For low end, you need a decent output transformer, and they costs.
11.
really.?
Quite true.
12.
I'm going through this very quandary myself at the moment. Only played a 5 string once, in a shop for about ten minutes and it was oodles of fun - but was it a novelty that would soon wear off? Would I find I barely used the extra string, and it would just get in the way after I'd had my initial fun with it? To be honest, the main consideration is budget - I can't really stretch to a good 5er so I would have to buy an entry level 5er and many people have cautioned against that as it usually means a rather flappety low B. But I had loads of fun playing a 5 :-)
This low B thing - although I've only played entry-level 5s (and a Bongo HH years ago in a shop in Cardiff), I don't believe it affects any bass more than another, scale lengths being equal. String choice must make a huge difference.
13. Great post, very informative! I'm definitely leaning toward a hard case - hard cases only for my electrics, for instance. So the potential downsides probably matter less to me. Of course, this might all change the first time I gig a DB!
14. I'm still fairly new to 5ers, but as everything is Fender/Squier, the disconnect is a little less jarring, string spacing the same, etc.
15. Another vote here for Fagen's Ruby Baby. One of my all-time favourite tracks, and a cracking bass line to boot.
16. Don't be put off by this or that B string. I've found that it's as often your choice of string which affects that, every bit as much as scale length. Your favourite brand might sound crappy - try something different! My favs are TI Jazz Flats, but the B is a flabby 136 gauge monster. Got a Squier P5, couldn't afford the TIs anyway, put Chromes on it. Amazing! Treat it as a completely new instrument and experiment!
17. The G4M's bulk isn't an issue car-wise. Will check out Tom & Will!
18. I'm thinking of the hard foam/canvas like the G4M case, £129. Seems a good compromise?
19. So, those of you who gig DBs, what do you put them in? Bag? Hard case? Nothing? I'm already thinking about getting a better DB, and want to, if I decide to go ahead, get everything sorted in one go - bass, bow, case. I'd be grateful for your thoughts.
20. Er...preppy?
