I love that page from a notebook listing who the basses were for ... and the spelling mistakes on it!

1121 went to Cafe Jaques
1128 went to Entwhistle
1132 went to Blue Oyster Col
1138 went to Straps
1143 went to Manhatan Transfer

I saw Strapps at the Marquee in 1979 so I guess Joe Read was probably playing his Wal that night. Can't say as I noticed. I saw a LOT of bands at the Marquee in those days and I remember that gig as quite simply the loudest I ever experienced there. Horribly, nauseatingly, ear-bleedingly loud.

Also puzzled to see 1119 listed as Alan Spenner of Voice Squad / Jim Capaldi ... I thought he was strictly Roxy Music at that time, and I didn't know he'd played with Capaldi. I've never heard of Voice Squad (? Vice Squad, maybe).

Yeah, I have to say I noticed that too, but it made for some interesting reading all the same. So many blasts from the past.
In fact, among others listed, I still have the original Cafe Jacques vinyl album, remembering too that it was John G. Perry (ex-Caravan) on bass. Credited on 'Wal Custom Bass'.
Cafe Jacques ("...Chris Rea meets Steely Dan..."!) have a Myspace for anyone interested.

As I remember it, Voice Squad was basically a continuation of Kokomo. I think I saw them two or three times in west London venues at the time (The Golden Lion, The Greyhound, etc). The most wonderful Alan Spenner played on at least a couple of Jim Capaldi albums around 79/80.

A bit off-topic I know but the Voice Squad were principally Frankie Collins, Dyan Birch and Paddy McHugh - originating in the Liverpool band Arrival and subsequently the voices in Kokomo (hence Spenner) and countless London sessions. Pure class.
