Bassists who have been in West End musicals...

Go and sit in with the regular player at least twice while they do it. Take a copy of the pad and recording of the bassist's headphone mix. Practice it loads. Go in and try to play like the regular person. That's it!

It can be quite a lot of work to get it together in the first place, but once you're up and running it's a very straightforward and civilised way to do a gig and earn some money. Also, the standard of musicians in West End pits is very high so although the material may not always be your preferred choice, it can be a very musically rewarding experience.
