jmsjabb
I am thinking about making a body and was wondering about using cherry with a walnut top. I was thinking 3/4 cherry to 1/4 walnut, defined with a think maple layer. I don't see cherry mentioned much. Am I on the wrong track? Otherwise it would be Ash / walnut, or Maple / Walnut, but I don't want a harsh sounding body. Over to the experts
Mr. Foxen
Mo Clifton digs cherry. That's about all know about it.
7string
Pretty sure Warwick used cherry at some point.
BassBod
This one's English cherry body (one piece) and American cherry neck. The American is denser and darker, but does tend to have small resin pockets (black holes).
henry norton
Cherry's pretty good so far as my experience goes. It's a bit denser than alder or lime (basswood), but cuts nicely and has a medium to tight grain which finishes well. The main reason people don't use it much for guitars is probably because it's not Alder, Maple or the wood of the moment, Swamp Ash. Once something becomes the norm it's often hard for conservative musicians to try alternatives. You should go for it, be different!
essexbasscat
have a look at the everson guitars web page. There's a bass with a cherry body on there, natural finish too. Very interesting shape too T
Eversonguitars
Hi The bass on the site was the first bass I tried using cherry - it works really well as a body wood and I'm planning to use it more- It's similar to walnut in density and working characteristics and a nice alternative to ash if you're after a paler wood. Oh and the 4lb claim on that page is a mistake, not quite that light but it was under 8lb!
