Rattling A string

By "white bit" you mean the nut? Have you changed brand or gauge recently? If so the string may be a touch loose in the nut and you'll need to pad it out a bit; a piece of paper under the string or an elastic band (or hairband!) around the headstock at the nut can both work well as a cheap and simple fix.
More winding on the post would help. If you've already cut it short, try forcing down what wrap you have and hold it down as you re-tighten up to tension.
If it's a Fender style headstock (4-in-a-line), the A string doesn't have the benefit of being right next to the nut like the E string for angle over the nut, nor the benefit of a string-tree like the D & G strings. So by giving it a little bit more winding than you'd give the other strings, you allow the string to sit lower on the tuner, giving a tighter and therefore more tensioned angle over the nut.
