I've got a James Tyler 4 string for sale. I know of only one other owner in the UK of one of these rare beauties. He told me Tyler hasn't made basses for 6 years now, so rare as hen's teeth is appropriate. More tonal options than any other bass I've played and owned - and that includes GB, Benavente, Zon, Kubicki, Status, various Fender, Pensa etc. Unwilling seller to be honest, but credit card debt needs some serious cash throwing at it.

Difficult to know where to pitch this baby, but the owner of the other one ("7string" is his user ID on talkbass) suggests somewhere between £1500 - £1800. i know that's serious dosh, so I will listen to serious offers for a quick sale. All Tyler basses were hand-made. This has a terrific Demeter pre-amp with three frequency switches.

7string's thread on Talkbass is here:

A guy called RoboChrist from Toronto said on the thread above - "I can vouch for this model! Somebody buy this thing. Wicked pickups, full Demeter preamp with freq centre switches....insane."

The review of my James Tyler 4 string is on Basschat and can be found here

It's an amazing bass to play and just sounds ridiculously good. The bass advertised for sale is only the second which I've ever seen for sale in the UK. I bought the first one sight unseen from The Bass Gallery and purely on owner feedback and James Tyler's reputation. It's the best 4 string bass I've ever played.

Good luck with the sale.

Thx 7string - one offer of £800 so far. Guys if anyone wants this fantastic bass an offer in 4 figures may just persuade me to wing it on its way to you (& I don't mean £10.01 lol).

Don't want to send this to the Bay. A treat for Xmas!
And weight would be good as well...
Width at the nut on the neck is 1.5 inches and the bass weighs in at 8.5lbs. I've got small hands and the neck feels beautifully crafted and sits comfortably - no awkward finger stretches. I'd forgotten just how good it sounds unamplified too - they say that's a measure of a good bass don't they? Percussive, tight, resonant. Sh*t I wish I could keep this!

(Case is made by SKB if anyone cares)

Found this clip of Neil Stubenhaus playing a Tyler (well he always plays them!) - this must be from a video-cassette (remember them?!!). The clip has got to be at least 20+ years old. Shape slightly different, headstock the same and the tone!

Also found a description of the demeter pre-amp Tyler used - master volume, buffered blend, gain (0dB-+10dB), and switchable bass (60hz - 120hz), midrange (400hz - 800hz), treble (1.25khz - 2.5khz) controls that offer +/- 25dB. Pick-ups look like Tyler custom made, split in the centre like a Rickenbacker horseshoe.
