That's exactly how I felt about the Matt Freeman Video.

I am a huge Jaco fan-to the point of having a large canvas print of him in my living room-
but I don't think that his improvised solos were all that good. The composed solos, like
Havona, are pure brilliance, but where improvising is concerned Jeff Berlin was way
ahead.

However Jaco opened the door to a new way of playing, and whether you like him or
not,you have to respect how he advanced the Bass Guitar in a way that no one else has.....
with the exception of Stanley Clarke.
Yeah, that's exactly how I felt about the Matt Freeman video as well.

And I for one love Jaco's solos!

Lets see yer Jaco canvas then! Where did you get it?
To me Jaco was not a great soloist, his case was as other say "hit & miss" but when we talk about groove, well there is no one better.

For some great Jaco's groove check these ones:

This one is not bad and please remember that all that was in the 70's when no one was doing it.

"In France They Kiss On Mainstreet" is a masterclass in groove playing.

There is a series of Jaco videos on YouTube that left me feeling sick when I saw them last week. Titled "Jaco Lives", it's a recording of an interview from towards the end of his life. Quite frankly, who ever posted it should be ashamed.

Ive only started to properly appreciate Jaco more recently. His tone is awesome, his playing is immense. Changed the way we view the electric bass.

Matt Freeman is also a very talented bassist. True, he isn't doing it the 'proper' way with fingers, but he knows how to kick out some very fast bass shred. Not many punk bands have bass as good as that.

Bridging the gap between a more musical punk bassist and a fast finger technique is Brian from A Wilhelm Scream. Posted before, I know.....listen to the tap 25 secs in

I appreciate any good bassist from every genre. I think the bassist that first screamed to me 'look at me playing the bass and being more technical than the guitarist' was Flea.

I will reseach more into Jaco now...I should learn more about him. Basically, I love bass. the end!

Of course, when we're talking about Jaco's playing later on, we're talking about someone who was quite mentally unstable. When he was younger, focused and had it all to prove, he did some of the best bass guitaring ever.
I bought his solo album when I was about fifteen and presumed that was a normal standard for jazz stuff(it was my first jazz album). I can't say I've heard anything much like it since. I never listen to those solos anymore cause it just makes me sad.
