I was thinking of looking at Roscoe for my 5 string investment. Although they are not custom as such, they seem to be held it very high regard.

I live nowhere near Bass Direct now so testing within the next 6 months is out of the question, but I would really like to consider the Roscoe line.

This one is nice:

Anyone have any idea how long these take to be built and shipped? I have 11 months basically.

That one is in stock. I saw it yesterday I'm sure. pretty confident thats a pic of the actual bass mate. Mark generally ships next day well!

Action on my Roscoe is too good to be true... perfect in fact!

EBS Combo will be with me tomorrow. Mark agreed to send it with me as I was travelling on a packed train with a bass and a bag already :-)

Ah!

I wonder how long it takes to get a non stock item over...hmm.

Do Roscoe provide a nice case with their basses?

I believe most of there basses are made to shop order, so prob a few months. I assume when a retailer sells one he would order another to fill it's slot on the wall so to speak.

They come with a Roscoe gig bag which is a massively padded case with 'ROSCOE Guitars' Embroidered on it. When I say Passed I mean padded... Both sides as thick as the bass itself made of sponge, covered on the inside with a soft felt...

Am already eyeing up a vent panel with that though in mind...

Have just got back from an audition/rehearsal for a band which looks to be my new proper band!! Woohoo. Love the stuff and have known them for a while due to playing gigs with them a while back.

I took the Roscoe fretless, as it was the only bass I had at hand, it's totally not the bass you would usually pick for a metal band, and it had light guage strings... But somehow it worked seriously well, and the string rattle from the de-tuned light strings just added to the sound.

They have asked me to join providing I use the fretless 6 :)

Loving this new bass!!

This is what Im thinking...my views of 'this bass is right for that' have recently been vanquished completely.

I am having a good old nose at the Roscoe site, and I MAY...but not certain, combine my need for a 5 string with my want for a fretless. If the Roscoe is that nice to play....it might suit me down to the ground.

If you going to spend that much money, take a day off and go to Bass Direct and try a few out. Each model has it's own feel and because it suits me, doesn't mean it suits you. I've learnt my lesson spending 2k on a bass without being sure.

It's worth a days holiday and petrol/train fare to get the right one!

EBS Session 60 arrived as promised. Lovely little bit of kit, heavy for a little amp, but lighter than most amps! Great range of tones, along with a 'character button' which gives a classic EBS slap sound with boosted highs and lows, plus scooped mids. The Enhanced Filter makes the treble control act as a mid scoop as well.

Amazing tone from a little combo and LOUD!!!

I do however have one issue with it... there is a very loud hum from it during operation, so much so that you can feel it vibrate when switched on and it audible over your playing at home volumes. Im 99.9% confident this was not there on the amp I tried. I shall investigate further...

OK... The EBS combo is vibrating so much I can feel at the other side of the room... Me thinks it's certainly not right! Tis a bit of a let down, but fingers crossed I can sort a timely replacement and all will be well!

Update - Exchange all sorted with yet more stunningly quick service from Mark @ Bass Direct. Replacement being delivered early next week.

Update 2 - Collection of faulty combo happened today as promised. Yet another nod for Bass Direct's service. Looking forwards to recieving the replacement.

As promised the replacement has arrived. Works perfect! Almost no operating noise at all and no vibrations.

What a fantastic little combo. Impressive top end due to the tweeter and handles a low B far better than I imagined it could. Having blown a couple of Peavey MicroBass combo's in the past I was reluctant, buy my god… the lap tones this amp allows is stunning.

Real loud and compact and punchy. The tone is clearly EBS, but not quite as clean as the big ams so you guys a little unsure of the sound may appreciate it. Perfect little home practice/small gig amp.

Very happy
Very nice evolving collection you have there, Shep. When's the Spitfire 6 coming along? :)

Rich.
Hey Rich,

it will be a while yet I'm afriad. It's going to be something very special... As such it may take longer than expected. Also worth noting it will be the first ever Spitfire 6.

Untill then I'm rather happy with the set up I have!.

That caught my eye as well! Very pretty...

I'm planning on going all 6 now, finding the Roscoe neck the most comfortable I've played beside the GB. The 6 will hbe similar dimensions I think. My desire to own a huge collection has totally drifted recently. One fretted, one fretless is looking like it will be the way for me.

Amp wise, I'm sold on the EBS.

New toy from [SFX]…

Interface box to protect my ever growing pedal board. This provides (and I quote)…
- Electrostatic protection on input/output. It protects the pedals from electrostatic charges that can be carried through the jacks.
- EMI protection. Filters the input from radio interferences.
- Polarity and overvoltage protection. If the input power supply voltage is too high or the wrong polarity the device protects the pedals.
- Power supply filtering. The unit filters the power supply from spikes and noise.
- Mechanical protection. When the unit is installed in the pedalboard, none of the pedals is subject to mechanical stress through the input/output connectors.

I have also picked up a Jim Dunlop High Gain volume pedal for some crazy swells with growling effects and feedback. My DD-3 is leaving the building and a DD-20 is replacing it this week, plus another 2 small custom items from Mammoth sounds are joining me as well.

Lovely :-)

The above pedal board is up for grabs.

My Spitfire 6 is underway, and I have my eye on having a RIM Marseer 6 built.

All exciting. As soon as I have some pics of progress etc for the Spitfire I'll post them.

There is a new addition to the family! This is effectively a stand-in instrument to last me until my GB and RIM 6 strings are complete. My GB 5 has retrned to GB and so I was left with only the fretless.

I picked this up in a 'well used' condition as a fix up/clean up project and to give me something nice to play.

I spent an afternoon stripping and cleaning and here are the results…

1st up… Pic of how it was upon arrival (these were not taken by me, I was too excited and got stuck in before taking any!)

There are a number of dinks and cracks in the finish which don't bother me too much and some buckle rash on the back, but mainly it was dirt. The fretboard needed a good seeing too and the Neck had some dark patches where the lacquer had been replaced with sweat and grime.

I cleaned the neck down but underneath the grime it had eaten away at the Lacquer in certain patches…

I got to work with some fine wet & dry, followed by some finishing paper and came up with this…

There are still a couple of areas that have less lacquer less than others but the feel is perfectly smooth and slight discolouration in areas really doesn't bother me. It is silky smooth now.

Next the fingerboard got an hour of cleaning with lem-oil and scraping out around the frets with cocktail sticks. After a few coats and a good polish here are the results…
