Hi everyone,

I’m Laura, new here and still finding my way around the bass. I started playing a few months ago on a [model of your bass, e.g., Yamaha TRBX174], mainly practicing at home and trying to build solid fundamentals.

At the moment, I’m a bit unsure about how to structure my practice time. Sometimes I end up just running through random exercises or playing along with songs I like, but I feel I’m not improving as efficiently as I could.

So I’d love to hear from you:

How do you structure your daily or weekly practice routines?

Do you focus more on scales, technique, or full songs when starting out?

Are there any “must-learn” exercises or tips that really helped you in the early stages?

I really appreciate any advice or stories you’re willing to share. Excited to be part of this community and learn from experienced players here!

Thanks,
Laura Woods

Well, firstly welcome

and you’re in the right place to get polite and well-reasoned advice with this 👍

if it were me, all over again, I’d first get a teacher to make sure I hadn’t picked up bad habits from self-tuition

we have lots of US members here btw

@Bluewine @jd56hawk @dclaassen amongst others, you aren’t the only one
