Anyone shot a Gig with a DJI Osmo Pocket 3?

Not sure if this is the correct forum, but here goes. 

I was just wondering if there is anyone with pub gig footage, shot on a OP3.

Very tempted to get one (as i now have a Cat), but these seem to be quite an expensive camera. 

Ive  got the OP1 (which i hardly ever use) and it does ok, as well as most of those cameras with that size sensor, but i like the idea of the 1’’ sensor in the OP3.

We filmed some promo videos with a professional videographer the other day and he pulled one of these out for a play as he’d just bought it. 
 

I’ll try and get the footage at some point but from the 5 minutes looking at it outside at some scenic footage he was filming, the quality was unbelievable! 
 

I’ve been looking at the insta 360 as I wanted to find a clip that could attach it to my headstock but so far I can’t find anything that would achieve this. I’d say that the Osmo would be too big for this use.

I went ahead and got one anyway, as it does look very useful. I’ve hardly used my old one but this seems more like a big step up. It’s more for giving to a mate in the audience to film rather than them use their phone etc. and shoot portrait 🙄

From my early tests in low light (just the cat at home) the quality is very good compared to other devices i have like this. 
It needs to be simple to use and it doesn’t get much simpler than rotate the screen and its recording, with horizon levelling. 

I have used my GoPro and Max at gigs from the stage. On larger stages I’ve put the Max on the end of the Insta selfie stick, sticking out from the PA stand. This has worked really well. Those 360 cameras give a bit more interest and ability to vary the view over the fix ones like the action cameras.

Finally got to use the Osmo Pocket 3 at a small pub gig. There is a bit of distortion as its a wide lens, but other than that im really impressed. Very clean for low light and audio is much better than my iphone Pro.

Unedited clip here. Not taken from a good angle but it wasn’t taken by me. I’m at the back. Just about noticeable. As you can see, it was a bit cramped up there. 
This was shot in normal mode, 4K 30fps. 10bit H.265

Agreed - that's very decent image and sound quality! A 1" chip does seem to be the magic number for indoor low light gigs.

 

Given the cost did you consider getting something like one of the Sony a6000 series with its APS-C chip + a Rode stereo mic, which combined will be in a similar price bracket?

Yeah, it’s not bad and seems to handle the high dynamic range ok

ill try and get some real low light footage this week. 
I shot this when we were setting up. It’s a bit darker in places.

I have a Canon R7 so have the ability to shoot C-log etc if i want, the point is i couldn’t give that set up to someone in the audience to use.  It’s hard enough ensuring they don’t do bloody portrait video as it is. 
The OP3 is just perfect for gigs, plus it’s stabilised and no one will really nice e

it being used. 
The gig was all recorded in Logic on an iPad as a 14 track project, so the sound is covered (just need to re mix it all). 
This was also the first time out with my Zoom H4e recorder, set about a foot from the snare drum. It came out very clean and had a good crisp top end without any distortion (that i can hear).

That all makes sense. So we are not hearing the audio from the DJI itself, just the video?

I totally get you not wanting to be too reliant on an audience member - we just stand mount our camera and try to remember to stop it going into standby mode every 30 mins!

Biggest improvement would be to light the band so you can see your faces!

 

I know everybody has their own take on mobile, easy setup lighting... but if you flood light your band then have the other lights doing their thing, the presence of your band will be enhanced. At the moment, there's nothing different  between how you are being lit and the people on the dance floor.

 

(I hate sound to light lighting btw so I'm a tough crowd)

So true, but we find it very hard to light the band from the front at a lot of our gigs. Small stages are a pain. 
We do use a few LED spots/ Disco type lights on the floor pointing towards us a lot of the time, but it’s not ideal.

We recently got a couple of these, and were quite surprised at how bright they are. We didn’t use them at the gig on Sat but at the previous one we found they made quite a difference to how we looked from further away.

That's fair Russ, but I think the counter is that sound to light can give a band some additional visual energy for the audience? No?

 

Having said that:

- lighting is a missed trick for many bands and certainly not an area of great expertise for most;

- our lighting rigs tend to be fairly basic (and yet another thing for the put upon bassplayer to have to sort!).

Yes, we are the same. Me and Dawn have to travel with my gear, the PA and all the lights, so we are limited to what we can take. 
Also the stages are quite small and it’s difficult sometimes lighting is from the front, at least at head height.

I dunno, Id rather see a well lit band than a light show. You know you have hanging bolt points on top of your speaker cabs? Perfect place to put secure a led panel on top of the speaker to cross fire across the stage.
