I kind of thought that too, they were for absolute beginners before Squier took over. I have read some threads that say that the wood and build quality on the necks is excellent though, so they have become kind of legendary, a bit like JV's have hence the high price perhaps? No personal experience as to whether that's true or not, and i certainly wouldn't splurge that much on one.

 

I'd imagine that these are only rare by dint of the number that were abused and busted up by their teenage owners, they were hardly a low production number instrument.  The only reason that Planet Earth is not neck deep in Squiers by now is the number that end up in a skip every year.
