Songs/basslines to aim for? (Intermediate)

Recommended Posts

I'm a guitarist of 20 years of so (mostly blues rock, metal, etc) who's recently picked up bass - and I absolutely love it. I've found that the basslines on the tracks I loved on guitar aren't as enjoyable as I expected, however!

I've had some enjoyable goals recently with Vulfpeck songs - for example Dean Town and Conscious Club were tracks to learn and I've got them down - they're brilliant fun to play.

Any suggestions for what I should aim for next? Really just looking for fun, bass-driven tracks that challenge me a bit but are rewarding to master!

Teen Town, or something from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaco_Pastorius_(album)

Welcome to the dark side! If you're enjoying playing Vulfpeck stuff, then it might be worth exploring more funk/disco/jazz-funk bands. Some bands/tracks off the top of my head are:

• Jamiroquai - Don't Give Hate a Chance, Runaway, Whatever It Is I Just Can't Stop, Alright, Manifest Destiny

• Incognito - Colibri, Magnetic Ocean (and lots of others that I can't recall...)

• Chic/Sister Sledge - basically anything with Bernard Edwards on it.

• Tower of Power - What Is Hip?, Only So Much Oil In The Ground, You've Got to Funkifize

• Stevie Wonder - Master Blaster, Sir Duke, Do I Do

Free - Mr. Big

The book with CDs: Standing in the shadows of Motown.

If you like progressive, CAB (Brunel, MacAlpine, Chambers, Auger) is interesting, if a bit complicated.

These are really pop, but who cares:

Peter Gabriel - So.

ABC - The lexicon of love

...and all those transcriptions here in basschat, lots of interesting stuff.

Start with Music Of My Mind and work up to Hotter Than July (it's ok to leave  out Secret Life Of Plants!).
