Something from Jimmy Haslip today. This is his complete bass performance on the tune 'Homecoming' from the 1985 Yellowjackets album, 'Samurai Samba'. I chose it because it is mostly an easy read but there are some tricky fills in there so be warned!

Nice. I'm currently transcribing some Haslip bass lines too. Allan Holdsworth and Yellowjackets

Nice one, Chris. I will avoid both for now, then. I have plenty of ideas for more obscure transcriptions to be getting on with!

No need to avoid them for me. I'll DM you the tracks I'm working on.

...and some of their stuff is absolutely incredible so go and check it out. This transcription is not too difficult as the tempo is very forgiving but there are a couple of tricky moments.

Arranged, yes. Jobim has never sounded like this.

In your pages you wonder, which bass is he using. I don't have IG, but managed to see one of his solos there. He has a greenish Moollon 5, a Gary Willis Ibanez fretless (GWB1005?), and a J like bass. Amp seems to be an Aguilar.

Whatever the bass is, his sound is pretty soft even with a fretted electric (something I like).

I've seen him live and he sounded so good, but couldn't understand what happened there in the fretboard. Watching and hearing made my brains go crazy.

I've always thought he must be slapping with a finger rather than thumb and pulling with his thumb. Otherwise i cant get my head round how he does it.

An incredible player. Loved it when he played with Gino Vannelli especially Brother to Brother album and even coached / helped Sandin Wilson who took over bass duties with Vannelli. Again another fantastic bassist.

A stunning performance from Dave Holland on his composition 'The Empty Chair (For Clare)', a dedication to his wife who had recently passed away. Some deep guitar work from Kevin Eubanks who is such an idiosyncratic player. The tune is from Holland's 2013 'Prism' album.

This is one of my all-time favourite albums

Another one from the Tribal Tech 'Spears' album, this is Gary Willis's bass part for the tune 'Island City Shuttle. Lots of weird bar lengths. Remeber, when you writing it down, you are recording what you are hearing not what the tune actually IS.  The performance is what matters not the dots. So, if you disagree with my take on the differing bar lengths it doesn't make it wrong. It just means I have grouped it in a different way. It's the noise you make when you are playing it, not the dots themselves.

A nostalgia trip today, this is the Graeme Murray bass part to 'Arrive Alive (Eyes In The Night)' from the 1984 Pallas album, 'The Sentinel'. Just a thumping bass part with enough odd time signatures to justify the 'neo-Prog' title (these guys were running in the same circles as Marillion, IQ, Pendragon, Solstice and Twelfth Night et al). Happy days.

Any plans to do any IQ transcriptions Rob? They’re still going strong, having just released another album “Dominion”, their 14th (not including oddities and live archive collection releases).

Superb stuff Rob. I used to go see them in Glasgow on a Sat afternoon. They would play Echoes, Suppers Ready and I Know What i Like then add in some of their own songs. I remember buying a tape of the album and have been buying them on and off over the years. We even managed to persuade them to play our local pub gig at The Heathery bar which at the time was the biggest "pub" gig in UK holding 250-300 people if i remember correctly.

Hugely popular band up here in Scotland. Unfortunately the singer Euan left which was a shame as he used to appear with all the Genesis style costumes.

Just a fantastic group of musicians.

Great to see them on your page.

Road of Bones is a classic Prog album IMO. Up there with Seconds Out.
