SoundCloud Advice

[PauBass]

I have set up a Soundcloud account with the idea of uploading bass covers I have been recording. The aim is to use it kinda like a portfolio for function/covers/dep work so when someone asks me I can direct them to my page and they can have a listen to my playing.
So far every song I have tried uploading has been removed for copyright issues, is this not allowed or am I doing something wrong?

I've only used it fir original stuff, maybe use Youtube instead ?

Just checked some covers I uploaded to SoundCloud 2 months ago. Still there, no problems.

Are these covers where you overlay your bass part on the original, or completely new recordings?

The only track I've had taken down was a private one (!) where I'd downloaded some stems for a remix competition, and uploaded my rough-mix of the raw tracks as a reference. I expect there's some sort of clever title-plus-audio-fingerprinting going on there somewhere.

Yes, these are known songs from various artist (Bruno Mars, Chic, The Clash, Stevie Wonder, Lenny Kravitz, Jamiroquai....) where I have overlayed the bass on the original song.

That's probably the issue - there are loads of "original" covers on SoundCloud, if you know what I mean.

when you upload the file you can set tags and change the copyright setting

i set ours as creative commons for a list of 8 full song cover versions for our band - been there since november last year with no problems

maybe check that its not set to some default setting and that you are actually claiming the copyright on an original song

Yes, I have tried so many different ways and I still can't upload them, from changing the copyright setting to giving the song a different name and no luck

I've never encountered this myself - but then I only ever upload original tracks and suitably mangled remixes to SoundCloud.

I'm guessing it uses a some kind of clever detection software to identify licensed tracks (akin to that used by SoundHound).

After a quick Google, I found their legal statement here:

"SoundCloud is using an automated content ID system that recognizes copyright protected content. If it detects copyright protected material in a private upload, it will be blocked."

So there's your answer.

My only suggestion would be to sufficiently alter ("remix") the content of the tracks you're covering or use another platform for sharing your music.

Any ideas on what other platforms people use for sharing their music? Not too keen on YouTube and recording myself on video.

You don't need to record yourself on video to put the music on YouTube - you can just put the music against a still image, or even just a blank title page.
