Catchy title eh... :)

So wassis about then...? Well after taking my "pimp my bass" skills to another level with the Ibanez Blazer,

http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=4324&hl=teaser

(now in the loving and trusted hands of Pete!) I thought it that if I was going to do a P bass and get seriously jiggy with it then I'd have to do it properly.

How can you do that if you dont start with a US P...? well IMO you cant. So if I'm going to get anything made by Fender that plays anywhere near as good as my PRSs, then its going to have be seriously pimped (even my custom shop P hasnt got that -- something--).

So take one very young (Nov 2007) Highway One P.. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...ender+precision

And ditch everything except the neck and body.

Go shopping......

1. Black Hipshot A style Bridge
2. Black Hipshot Ultralight clover tuners x3
3. Black Hipshot Ultralight Clover D tuner
4. Black Hipshot 3 string tree
5. Graphtec Trem nut
6. Gotoh black chrome jack plate
7. Fender black neck plate.
8. Bartolini 8CBP pick ups.
9. switchcraft electrics
10. custom made (by me) 5 ply black pickguard.
11. Black Schaller strap locks

Neck wasn't as straightforward as I'd wished as I had to make aluminium shims for the headstock holes.. bummer. Plugged existing tuner holes with Maple levelled and matt varnished. Fitted shims and new tuners. and string tree. Polished frets but they didnt need levelling as its too new to have any significant wear!

Body- rout new hole for side exit jack, plug old bad ass bridge holes and level and paint. Fit new bridge and jack plate, and Barts.

Just gotta make the scratchplate- (tomorows job) and finish the wiring.....

Pics when finished!

So its ready....

3.8kg-- ;) -- so its light!!! and well balanced for a P (no neck dive). It sounds really warm and spot on bluesy. The Barts don't take much to push the valves in to overdrive... and then its sounds one mean motherf**ker...

I wanted to hate it so I can sell it but its good, the necks really chuffin good. My partner says its louder than the Ovation, :) it isnt but it sure vibrates plates in the kitchen...

Its not PRS good but good enough to be a keeper and use!

Enjoy.....
Great job and I don't even like Fenders !!

This could be a new business for you. Get a Fender and have it Burpstered

Makes you wonder why Fender can't do these kind of changes themselves....
Ta mi duck.... :)

Fender do have a custom shop...... but we know how much they charge......!!!!!

Now then I just need some slightly longer screws for the bridge to get the intonation..... ;)
I do.... (and thank you!)

and No, its not a Gothic thing....

it just looks right on light wood....

Dontcha think? :)
Nope, I think it looks right on the right wood. It works for the Blazer, I don't think any other colour would look good on it, but my general pecking order for hardware is:

-Chrome
-Black
-Gold (bleurgh!)

Although it's entirely subjective. As tacky as I think it looks, certain occasions call for gold hardware. Squier did a really nice trans red 5 string P as part of the Pro Tone series, with a white pearl scratchplate and gold hardware. That was ball-drainingly sexy.

Jono....

I agree all the way down.... I also admit that I was not a big fan of gold hardware until the Ovation turned up....

I had to hunt hig and low to get a gold jack socket (great move BTW as unitl I replaced it I had no idea how sh1te the old one was..)

It looks well groovy, in a subtle way... However if I do ever find a black one to buy that may get Bob'd....

Chris,

Thanks.... Chrome? Pah!

I put a set of D'addario chromes 45-100 on to start as these are my default string. I'm going to try a set of GHS precision flats next (with a 105 E string) to see if I can get a bit more out of the D tuner.... That being said its pretty good as it is...!

As a side my guitarist (whose being playing 25odd years) had never seen a D tuner.....

Now he's hooked and wants me to fit one to his Strat......

:)
