Pedal to add valve-like warmth but not overdrive or too much colour?

Try the Ashdown LoMenzo Hyper Drive. It's very tweakable. You can add a lot of distortion, or just a little bit of warmth on top of the note. It's very intuitive and easy to use. You can blend the clean signal with the drive and you can pick the frequency you want to distort and use either a narrow or a broad range. I don't used it like a distortion, I use it exactly for the kind of function you described. I managed to dial such a subtle tone that it's almost impossible to hear the pedal it's even on. You only really notice it when you switch it off and the bass gets a bit lost in the band mix. Great pedal. I love mine. You think Dave will paint it black on request? B) (hate those finishes)

I originally wanted black, but this was Dave's response: "I would not recommend black as the base colour, just looks poor and tacky."
The one on this thread actually looks great IMO

I think Dave, whilst being a lovely bloke and awesome maker of pedals, paints them with a dog or something...

Why do they look like they've been lying around in an abattoir ?

Ask Dave Hall!

I had one that I loved, but the aesthetics are a bit annoying. I didn't care, but I got fed up with sound guys questioning whether my "homebrew" pedal was going to blow up their gear.

Fantastic kit, that's really well made, but the messy paint and scribbled on markings really do it a disservice IMO. I think if you order one direct from him you can ask him not to give it one of those finishes!

I had one built in a purple enclosure. No splashes!
