While ago I found this and bookmarked it. I've never tried it though!

Could always look on Flea Bay for a used one, I've seen some in a real used state recently and would be safer than playing with acid and probably be cheaper?

Can never get my head around buying something new only to trash it, but that's me just being an old git :D

I look after my stuff so the bridge, neckplate, chrome covers and tuners on my 1981 Precision look like new - although the bass itself has picked up some knocks & bumps. The nickel plated tuners on my 1990 ('62 reissue) precision have taken on a dull patina and look many decades older.

Just keep them as they are - artificially aged chrome always looks really crappy & obviously faked when its overdone. The chrome is there to protect them.

Yep - the other option is use the covers for 35 years. :D
I've done this - it definitely works and is environmentally sound.
