Yes, this is all contributory, but in the end they generally have a sound and as long as they are not being passed through a string of fx this is a good fun exercise. I must say I'd not be able to tell whether its miked up or DI'd.

As soon as I can work out how to do it, I'll put up an example or two myself.

without being mixed this is good experiment but once its been through the mixing process its a different storey. For example a mic'd cab usually delivers more bass and depth than DI will. But if you've DI'd it you can recapture the sound of a mic'd cab when your mixing it.

I can't tell the difference between basses with cellulose or any other type of paint so how am I supposed to tell different makes?

Seriously, I honestly can't tell a jazz on the neck from a Precision, but I would say this is different enough from what I would expect from a Precision that I would say it isn't no. 3.

In the quiet bit it has an un-fenderish characteristic so if I had to say one its no. 5.

Yes, impressive sounding track too. Was this really a competition (and an excellent one at that, I'd like to see more of these) or are you showing off a track with which you are justifiably proud?

They are all bolt neck Fenderesque basses so they all sound similar...The amp, cab and mic placement would make more difference...

Would it help if I said it was just plugged into a standard focusrite pre amp set flat? Probably not ..... Though I did try the 73 precision, the sounds was very different. Less natural low and high end. The MIM jazz was the best sounding set flat. The only difference was the high end boosted a little and in the chorus it was doubled with a sansamp overdrive on the audiosuite of pro tools. The best place to pick up the bass tone is the bridge. Thats when its clearest!
