83 Precision 1.750 inches (1" 12/16ths)
96 AND 06 Precision 1.625 inches (1" 10/16ths)

Current Fender specs for a 2008 Precision state 1.625 inches

I measured these with a micrometer. Hope that helps.

'83 with 1.75 maple (the best width/wood combination for a Precision if you ask me)
'73 with 1.625 rosewood
'77 Fretless with 1.50 rosewood (Jazz profile and too narrow for me really)
'79 Fretless with 1.625 maple (lovely)

I also have a spare '78 neck 1.625 maple which is lovely and which feels completely different to play to the 1.625 rosewood.

The above three widths are the Fender standard. 1.5 was standard on Jazzes and was apparently a custom order for Precisions (although they clearly did a lot of them in the '70s so read 'custom' as 'bog standard made to sound special'). Older basses tend to vary slightly around these widths, newer ones should be spot on. To most hands 1.75 it to wide (but I love it). 1.50 doesn't feel like a Precision to me. 1.625 is almost certainly the best bet if you have no particular preference. The Warmoth neck you describe is not a standard Fender width (it falls betwen the 1.625 and the 1.75 widths) so will feel chunky.

At least you could still spell it. :)

If you had some nuts would you measure em?

Like your style!

Thanks for all the replies. Nice one.

The precision I'm looking at has a 40mm nut width apparently - which is 1.574803149608 inches. IT's probably 1.65 I think, but the fella needs to borrow Muppet's micrometer.

Unless anyone know about MIM precisions having thinner necks?

If it's 40mm it's 40mm. I should have mentioned in the post above that these widths relate to USA Fenders, I have no idea about MIMs which might be different.
