I have come up with a design for a bespoke neck plate for my project bass and I'm on the look out for someone to make it for me out of stainless steel, I found one guy preparred to make it but it takes him a week to reply to each e-mail so it could be Christmas before he actually made it!

Any metal workers able to help out or recommendations appreciated.

I've been doing this sort of stuff at my Dad's workshop: Custom steel scratchplates.

Also the custom control plate from brass on DaveMauddib's Jaguar.

Simple one offs are doable, but stuff like scratchplates with inside curves and suchlike need to be done in batches to be worthwhile.
There's a little machine shop under the arches at Catford Bridge station:

C & R Metalworks,
12 Station Approach
Catford Bridge
London
SE6 4RE
020 8690 3336

Maybe worth a wiggle.
Thanks for the heads up for such a local company.

On a seperate note do they still have the jam sessions at The George in Beckenham? I think it was you that told me about them!

With that facility, you could probably build yourself a nice little part-time business making pickup surrounds. You can't get one for a MM, and even the P-Bass ones cost over £20.

Can you gimme an example? I'm guessing you mean the immediate surround, rather than a full plate, I can't quite picture a MM style one.

I was actually going to PM you about the same thing earlier but thought it might not be possible. But I agree with what stevie says - I'll be in need of a chrome pickup surround shortly to fit around an SSB-4 style soapbar.

I assume this is what he means MM Surrounds

That is pretty much what I'd be after too, only like I said, for a different kind of pickup. The only option I've found is to have them made by the guy who runs that site in the states, but it'd be more logical to get them from over here.

Have a look at the Yamaha bass here: http://usa.yamaha.com/products/musical-ins...=product_lineup

Click on the photo and do an enlargement.

Then have a look at the Allparts P-Bass surround in metal here. It's £32 !!!!
http://www.allparts.uk.com/online-shop/gui...ass-p-3594.html

I can't show you a Musicman pickup surround because I've been looking for one and I can't find one anywhere.

I think there's a opening here for a modest business you could run in the evenings. A small eBay presence with international sales, that kind of thing. You'd do all right. The main thing is that the initial investment would be miniscule and there would be practically no risk. If it doesn't work out, you've not lost anything. If you're entrepreneurially minded, it might be worth a punt.

There is someone in the US making custom surrounds already, but are very expensive and not everybody wants to order from the US. Their site is down at the moment - so I can't check.

Yes, that's the guy. $20 - 25 - and you have the hassle of getting them from the States. He seems to be the world's only supplier right now.

Doubt it was me, I don't have a visa for Beckenham :)

However... I *think* the jam still happens at the Cherry Tree by Norwood Junction station on alternate Sundays (trouble is I can never remember which week it's on). Also, the long-running Tuesday jam at the Forest Hill Hotel has relocated to the Perry Hill Tavern (formerly The Two Brewers) 78-80 Perry Hill SE6 4EY. Still on Tuesdays, kicks off about 9 ish. They also run a Blues evening on Thursdays (the old Rutland Arms lot) and are putting bands on other nights too - plus they serve Spitfire, which is no bad thing.

I have one of those P bass surrounds, it doesn't fit any of my (non-Fender) P basses. If anyone wants it, or 10, let me know. I do sort of want to do it as a business, but those things are a little specialist. I only did the rick plates because three people were interested right away, I've not really had much further interest. Was gonna do P plates next, it is easiest if I have a pattern from which to work.

Bloody hell I used to drink in the Two Brewers many many moons ago, we gave up when my friends who lived around the corner moved away, it was as rough as a badgers ... but we had some laughs there including a couple of New Years Eve nights that have gone down in history! I might try and get along one Tuesday or Thursday night.
