D-COOPER Posted February 1, 2011 Share Posted February 1, 2011 Hi folks.The nut on my G&L SB2 recently broke and i am getting a new brass nut fitted.I have always loved the the sound of Spector basses which i know have brass nuts.I was just wondering if anyone had good/bad things to say about them? Doddy Posted February 1, 2011 Share Posted February 1, 2011 I've got basses with brass,bone,plastic and phenolic nuts,and to be honest,as soon as you fret a note the material of the nut becomes irrelevant. EBS_freak Posted February 2, 2011 Share Posted February 2, 2011 The theory is that a metal nut makes an open string sound more like a fretted note. Whether you believe that or not, is up to what you wish to believe or not. Same kinda thinking behind the zero fret. If you want to be properly authentic, you should have a nickel nut to match your frets (good luck finding one! hen's teeth, especially in the UK) - I know Yamaha have installed one in their latest top of the range BB bass.
