Brass nut.

exactly. if you don't play only open strings, the difference would be unnoticable.

The theory is that a metal nut makes an open string sound more like a fretted note. Whether you believe that or not, is up to what you wish to believe or not. Same kinda thinking behind the zero fret. If you want to be properly authentic, you should have a nickel nut to match your frets (good luck finding one! hen's teeth, especially in the UK) - I know Yamaha have installed one in their latest top of the range BB bass.
