D-COOPER
Hi folks. The nut on my G&L SB2 recently broke and i am getting a new brass nut fitted.I have always loved the the sound of Spector basses which i know have brass nuts.I was just wondering if anyone had good/bad things to say about them? Doddy
I've got basses with brass, bone, plastic and phenolic nuts, and to be honest,as soon as you fret a note the material of the nut becomes irrelevant. Brass nuts are great, but not particularly vital.
neepheid
They look shiny (if you keep them clean) and are highly resistant to breaking.
henry norton
They go dull and green around the edges if you don't keep them polished. They do look pro though.

D-COOPER
Thanks guys.I was told a brass nut makes everything sound brighter but i guess that only counts for the 4 open strings. Looking forward to getting it back and trying it anyway.
Wil
I have one on my Spector. It looks nice, but I doubt I could tell the difference between it and a normal nut in a blind test.
EBS_freak
The theory is that a metal nut makes an open string sound more like a fretted note. Whether you believe that or not, is up to what you wish to believe or not. Same kinda thinking behind the zero fret. If you want to be properly authentic, you should have a nickel nut to match your frets (good luck finding one! hen's teeth, especially in the UK) - I know Yamaha have installed one in their latest top of the range BB bass.
