Fender deluxe Jazz 2002 (exotic woods)

Some photos and info on the Fender deluxe Jazz I took possession of this morning.

As you can see it's a Fender made from 5 piece exotic woods laminate, which I'd never seen before. Serial No suggests it was made in 2002 ( confirmed at Guitar Database website), is active, and weighs very little - certainly less that any other Fenders I've tried. I've included the info from the sale along with the pics..Anybody with any additional info please contribute..

Body Construction - Solid
Top Wood - Cocobolo (Nicaraguan Rosewood)
Neck Wood - Maple
Fingerboard - Rosewood
Frets - 22
Inlay - White Dot ( I think they're actually Abolone)
# of Strings = 4
Scale Length = 34" (86cm)
Headstock - 4 In-Line
Bridge Construction - Carbon Fiber (Graphite) (don't think this is right either, actually gold finish)
Cutaway Double
Finish - Amber, Walnut
Guitar Hardware - 1x Volume Control, Gold
Pickups Noiseless

Can I ask people NOT to drool TOOO much and to keep their GAS under control..
I'd have to ask if it's all original as well? That body and those pickups are somewhat un-fender-like... Although the neck is obviously original...

To be honest who cares if it's all Fender or not... It's blooming lovely. Kinda like a Fender/Overwater hybrid look going on!
I'm lead to believe that it's a "Fender Zone" (info courtesy of Bubinga5 and the headstock) - there are photos of similar basses when you type "Fender Zone" into google images...Fender again producing new instruments under the same name but these may be a budget model - those made in 91-93 were far from budget!! Cost aside, this feels like a proper quality item - lovely neck dimensions, active circuitry, quality exotic woods (almost unknown in a Fender) and gold hardwear.

If you're in Herts - come give it a try..(let me know you're coming though) :) :)

Very cool, it's nice to see Fender stretch out a little in the classic designs.

What gives you the idea the bridge is graphite? The dots look like abalone to me too.

Cocobolo is very heavy, and even though there's not much of it I'm surprised it's the lightest Fender you've played, I wonder if it's hollowed out?

Wikipedia has a short entry, short enough to just post the whole page.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Zone_Bass
"The Fender Zone is a fretted electric bass, introduced in 2001.
It has a slightly lighter and smaller body than previous Fender basses. The 2004 models were made of solid Mahogany and Walnut or Alder and Maple timbers and have a pair of Zone humbucking pickups powered by an 18V active 3-band preamp. The model appears to be designed to appeal to adventurous and innovative players, rather than traditionalists. Part of the best-selling American Deluxe Series, the Zone Bass replaced the Japanese P-Bass Lyte Deluxe (which featured a mahogany body, an active humbucking Jazz Bass pickup in the bridge position and a single 9V powered 3-band active EQ preamp), which was gone a year earlier.
The Mexican made Fender Zone bass is essentially the same design as the Fender Precision Bass Lyte, which was manufactured in Japan, except for the addition of a set of custom-wound hum-cancelling P/J pickups and a 3-band active EQ powered by a single 9V battery. The J-style bridge unit is supposed to be a customized version of a pre-2004 Deluxe Active Jazz Bass pickup. On the five-string Zone, it's essentially a Vintage Noiseless Jazz Bass pickup with solid covers. The Zone replaced the P-Bass Lyte after its discontinuation in late 2000. Despite their similarities, the Zone costs slightly less than the P-Bass Lyte. A five-string version of the Mexican Zone Bass was launched in 2005. Both the American and Mexican Zone basses were gone from the Fender pricelist at the end of 2006, due to low quality wiring."

Wow, look at what this guy's trying to sell one for. I guess sitting at a store for 6 years really brings up the collector value :)

I think his wood description of mahogany and walnut may be what you have.

thanks for this link..the info from the ad has been really useful and I've sent them an Email to see what other info they may have re: numbers, original cost, advertisements, etc. Can you ad this item to your "watch list" and let me know the final selling price? Any other info that you can ascertain from your side of the pond would be much appreciated..

It's in my watch list, send me a PM if I forget :)

I don't think he'll get a bid at all, the price is over what it would have cost new. He's going to need to get very lucky to sell it.

Here's an ad from your side of the world, it also suggests a walnut top.

And the maple version on eBay not getting a single bid at $1299
That's very nice indeed!

Are you sure the top is cocobolo? The ones I've seen have been maple or walnut. From the pics it looks a bit more like walnut to me - cocobolo tends to have a darker contrasting grain. Either way, lovely bass!
This is an advert for my actual bass - Gavin, (the seller) had it advertised in several places. Had little response..

As Simon1964 mentions, the body may not be Cocabola, the info I gave was based on the info I was given by the seller. I'm happy for anybody with real expertise on these matters to come have a look..

What blew me away was the fact that Fender actually experimented with exotic woods after 50+ years but failed to continue with it. I'm sure there are many Fender owners who would love to have a natural exotic wood bass...I think this is one area of the market which they could have exploited more!

The ad doesn't mention cocobolo or use the word exotic. It also doesn't say it's a graphite bridge but graphite neck reinforcement which makes more sense.

Here's the actual wording from the ad:

Guitar Type Electric
Body Carbon Fiber (Graphite)
Body Construction Solid
Top Wood Cocobolo (Nicaraguan Rosewood)
Neck Wood Maple
Fingerboard Rosewood
Frets 22
Inlay White Dot
# of Strings 4
Scale Length 34" (86cm)
Headstock 4 In-Line
Bridge Construction Carbon Fiber (Graphite)
Cutaway Double
Finish Amber, Walnut
Guitar Hardware 1x Volume Control, Gold
Pickups Noiseless
Pickup Configuration 2

This guitar is one of the best i have ever gigged with i was very reluctant to sell this lovely guitar, the reason for me selliing is becouse i recently have been laid off work and i need to pay bills and this beauty is the one thing that holds any value to me, my other guitar is only a cheap old westfield thats only worth very little but its something to gig with for now.

anyway this bass cost me £1600 from a place in bluewater 6 years ago, any one who buys this bass will not be let down by any means what so ever, it has had a recent set up, new strings there is no damage as i always leave it in its case (when im not using it) and always keep it well maintained it does come with a strap (leather fender) and also will have the case with it as well.

please who ever does win or buy this item please keep it well looked after .
If buyer lives in south east I am willing to meet half way or drop off as long as it is not miles and miles away

I think you can see now why I thought it was Cocabola..

 • 2 weeks later...
Sold For: US $1,200.00

Well below the asking price of $1699 but still a hefty price.
At todays exchange rate this is £750.42, a fair price for what you get I would say...but as you say, well below the advertised price..

Thanks for keeping us posted..
