Hi there

I'm new to this bass forum and a new recent bass learner. I used to play the cello but fancied a change however not to far a change from that so decided to pick up the bass. Had a go at guitar but my fingers are to dumpy for that. I have been up to the bass gallery a couple of times and always liked the look of the basses up there. Also started to really listen to the bass in the music i listen to.

So i bought myself a cheap bass of the internet and have been learning for about 3 or 4 months now. Am trying to teach myself but would appreciate any tips from you guys. I bought an HK from germany and went the whole hog and bought a 6 string. It sounds lovely, well to me anyway but being a novice i suppose it could sound anything but lovely to any longtime bass player. I have checked out some of your basses and there are some awesome looking ones on the forum.

Hope that this is going in the right place on the forum. Haven't used a forum before :)

Cheers

Was gonna ask which 2 strings i should cut off but to be honest i love the sound of the low B string. :-)

Welcome aboard. People here are very helpful in general if you have specific questions. :)[/quote]

Thanks for the welcomes.

Does anyone have any suggestions for any tutor dvds or books that i might be able to get hold of.
I've looked on the internet and there are a few.

depends what you want to learn really, i'd always recommend buying a bass for beginners book, to show you the basics of reading music as it's an essential skill

victor wooten has got some great slap guides and DVDs you can google

theres also 'slap it' which is a great book with lots of slap bass patterns that'll blow your mind

theres a great 70's disco funk book with similar patterns too

those are the first ones i found, but those are great for getting super funky, may be a bit hard seeing as your just starting, but get practising! :)

Welcome mate.

When I started learning, many years ago. I started with a book that I think was brilliant. It starts from the very basic and builds up around the blues scale which you can use in most live situation in one form or another.

I have suggested it to other people who were learning in the past who seem to have got on well with it aswell.

Seen one on ebay:

You might be able to find it cheaper but, at least you know the one I'm on about.

Hope that helps.

Pete
