Hagar is just a cheese-meister. Formulaic rock n roll.
The tensions between Roth and the Van Halens brought the magic.
Like when they did those two tracks for the greatest hits in the late 90s. It was instantly better than anything they'd done for years.

Apparently they were suggestions, but Templeman changed his mind once he started working with Roth in the studio. Pretty typical record company move, find a hot new band, then start mucking about with what made them so great in the first place! Usually they end up being content with sacking the drummer and replacing him with a guy who has been around the scene for a while, but that wasn't really an option seeing as the drummer was Eddie's brother!
If they had gone with Hagar when they first got a deal, they would have made a couple of decent albums before Sammy went back to his solo career, Eddie would have ended up playing for Ozzy and Mike would have had a career in someone like the Doobie Brothers or whoever. You probably would never had heard of AVH ever again, but who knows what Roth would have done - I certainly wouldn't bet against him becoming a star one way or another...

I love VH's first 4....Fair Warning is such an underrated classic.
I saw a clip the other day of Diamond Dave literally, obliterating 'Dance The Night Away'. It was painful. I know singers can have off nights, but my word......!
Sad to see. Never the greatest singer (but what a frontman), I wish I could un-see it!
I read a while back how producer Ted Templeman had wanted the band to dump Dave from the off. He suggested Sammy Hagar.....imagine how history would have changed? Sammy is fine, but DLR is such a part of those first 4.
Also drove the business, image etc

When I was 14 my first teacher, school instrumental lessons, was a classical guitarist, he started me off on Bach Cello etudes. I wanted to learn Guns n Roses.
My second teacher, private lessons, made me do jazz. Complicated big chords and funny times signatures, but I wanted to do Guns and Roses.
Neither of em let me do Guns n Roses and I'm so glad for that......I wasn't at the time.

Me too. No disputing the albums he made with VH are class. I thought he was decent enough live back in the day, but we’re talking about now.I thought some of the last album they made had that magic but he's not been good live for a long time. Still love him tho

I know what you're driving at, but as a die hard KISS fan of many decades, I have a rather blinkered view of Stanley's shortcomings. Vocals aside, he's match fit (ish) and they all put in solid graft. At their age, putting on that show is no easy thing. In fact, not an easy thing at a substantially younger than they now are. DLR on the other hand, fails on all counts. YMMV.
As a die hard Roth era VH fan, DLR has never been much kop live, but those albums.....superior to every rock band of that late 70's early 80's period.

Bicycle race is on YouTube and it is thoroughly mental. I was actually laughing listening to it because it is such a crazy and incredible bassline
That's why I wanted to hear it in isolation. I'll check it out.

He never had any to lose! The only member of that band with any grip on reality was Michael Anthony!
Defined this, I love the guy he's nuts. He's wrote some really interesting lyrics in his time too. Particularly Stay Frosty.

I was listening to bicycle race earlier. I would like to hear the isolated track of that.

"Robert Smith's depression prior to the recording of Disintegration gave way to the realization on his 29th birthday that he would turn 30 in one year. This was frightening to him, as he felt all the masterpieces in rock and roll had been completed well before the band members reached such an age."
Robert Smith was born in April 1959, finished recording Disintegration before he turned 30, and next produced Wish, which kind of proved his point.
Here are four more songwriters of the 80s, and what they produced either side of their 30th birthdays:
Steve Harris – Mar '56 – Powerslave – Somewhere In Time
Andrew Eldritch – May '59 – Floodland – Vision Thing
Dave Mustaine – Sep '61– Rust in Peace – Countdown To Extinction
James Hetfield – Aug '63 – The Black Album – Load
I had the idea of looking up every songwriter I could think of but seem to have run out of energy.
Plenty of songwriters seem to fall off their creative plateau well before 30 - Black Francis, Paul McCartney, erm Simon Le Bon. You get the gist.
Ah, the classic songwriters.
Lennon & McCartney,Dylan, Cohen, Paul Simon......Dave Mustaine!

For all those complaining about his voice, you are all wildly wrong. Have a listen hear, especially when it kicks in.

I did six months of gigs with only a secondhand Aria STB P bass and a Behringer BDI 21, straight to PA.
Total outlay £60, £70 if you include the lead.
I never had any issues or worries and would happily do it again, even using the Cruiser P bass I picked up recently for £20.
Spending money doesn't necessarily mean you've got gig competent gear, spending time maintaining whatever gear you've got usually does.
I once did a UK tour of a musical with a bass my parents bought me when I was 17. I spent a fortune on gin though.

A VIP area isn't very Grunge is it. If Kurt Cobain could see em now........what did he call em. Corporate rock whores or summat!

Let's face it if he hadn't done Live Aid etc, the geezer would be a footnote in pop history.

I wonder what they will release next. Maybe a jazz-blues or a blues-jazz record?
After hearing that single, I think they should change direction and release a rock album!

I have to admit to being a bit of a snob when it comes to GnR. I saw the original (and to my mind best) lineup at Donnington and any line up without Izzy isn't the real deal for me. It's a little known fact that Izzy was one of the major songwriters in that band and I have all of his solo albums. Also I loved Velvet Revolver and saw them a few times. Fair enough death kind of puts an end to any reunion plans in that direction but I just feel that this current line up is for making money. Ive read all of their books and they swore they wouldn't get back together. I know all artists are in this to make money but they were doing ok without this flogged to death line up. I remain unconvinced.
Deffo, no Izzy, no G'n'R. That band died in the early 90's. They were my favourite band but I think it's best left in the past. They were about being young and dangerous.
