I hate to admit it but I agree on Geddy. He can play. He 's good, but nothing particularly original or amazing. In other words, nothing Entwistle and Squire and their imitators hadn't already done. As for Mac -- this is what you're missing. It isn't his technical skill. Anybody playing for 2 years can play pretty much any of his bass lines. It's the COMPOSITIONAL skill. His ideas, voiceleading, phrasing, harmonic sense are all brilliant. Now if you don't get it, you don't get it and it can't be explained so you do. It's a little like the intro to Beethoven's 5th . It's one of the most powerful musical statements the world has ever known. But somebody can say, "Eh, it's only 4 notes. I CAN DO THAT."
I'm a big Beatles and Macca fan, with regards to his bass playing I wouldn't say his voiceleading etc are brilliant. They are just good. In relation to what was going on in White Pop it was brilliant but with regards to bass in a musical sense it's pretty basic, good, but basic. He was a cute player and i don't mean cos of his chubby cheeks and floppy hair! With regards to this thread will it ever end..............tomorrow never knows.....wahay...see what i did there!
What I love about the Basschat community is that no matter how heated or even childish the arguments get on here, they pale in comparison to the abuse I've seen hurled around on other music forums. Maybe it has something to do with the average age of most folks here. Or maybe it's a product of the easy going psyche common among bass players But the BC community is undoubtedly a very inclusive, friendly and accepting bunch of people - and that's a rare thing on the Interweb.
Active posts include off topic posts - and the count you see below your avatar doesn't. Is that what you meant?
Yes -
Well, I do find Jaco's defenders end up this coming across like this at times
Why is it so wrong for people to defend Jaco, or anything. In essence it's just the same thing as the one who attacks. So by criticising them you are essentially criticising yourself.
Thank you. That was very nice to read, indeed, and a great support. Must be doing something right then. Trying to explain what I mean: When I write, apart from often making mistakes, I can choose how much time I use on looking things up, and I can form sentences that only use the words and ways of expressing that I feel comfortable enough with. When I read, however, part of this freedom is removed, and often stuff does go over my head. In sum, I'll often look more able than I really am. OK, this has cost a lot of time and energy, and I'm tired and not capable of rereading and judging what I wrote. Will come back later and change where necessary, rather than not posting now. best, bert
Respect!

I love his jive way of talkin, I know he can come across as a nob, but he's a one off. I wish Bon Jovi would've given me a call before he recorded all of his hits, because the lyrics would've been smarter, the melodies would've been much more smashing, and they would've sold a lot fewer records." Great little solo by Eddie too, not the greatest but it all fits so nicely. I heard this track in the car a few days ago and thought it does sound good
I think it is one of the greatest! It's f***in wild that solo. That's when i love ed the most when he's just killer aggresive and going for it!

When i was a newbie here i started athread about Macca as a bass player as i had never encountered anyone who said he was an influence. It went epic in length( Fnurr fnurr) and tits up with insults in the end. So when i saw that beatles thread i stayed away. Looks like i was right! Also i mentioned in a thread a couple of weeks ago that since the new year there seems to be a little more negativity than usual, but people said....YOU'RE WRONG, SHUT THE f*** UP, well maybe not but it was alluded to that it hadn't!
Mate, pick your toys up and don't be a bell end. Your OP was deliberately inflammatory, and neither in an original or interesting way. There have been loads of threads like this and they don't ask or answer any interesting questions.
