1. IMO GK should have stuck to their RB line of amps. The new MB models turn me off, so I figure they are just adding another one along that line. Bob Gallien must be 80 years old, so how long do you think GK can keep going?
2. and to think of it! I just bought a used BOSS GT 10 and a GT 10B. (-: My Zoom B3 has some good features for using with a computer, but the Helix seems to be amazing in that respect.
3. Thanks, and I really need to find a way to defend myself and the preamp after the Bass Player review fiasco that is going on in this month's issue.
4. I'm still trying to find a way to get a ce certification for my preamps, before I will submit my exhibitor's application. Then there is the matter of 2 million GBP of insurance for two days. May have to wait another year. I hope not!
5. A preamp pedal will give more to help the eq, especially a tube preamp. A tube emulator can do similar things. I don't know about for recording, but that's what I've found for live sound.
6. Thanks! They've gotten back to me. I'll be making all the arrangements early this coming week.
7. I like a Gallien Krueger RB 700 II or a Fender, and any type of bass will do. I tried both the 100 watt tube amp and the Rumble 500. Fender or Gibson basses possibly. Active or passive. I'll provide strings. I've sent an inquiry to the proper people for registering for the event, but they seem to have forgotten about me. I asked for help with backline equipment, local hotels, tax questions, etc., which may have turned them off. I just hope I can get them to rent me some space for our exhibit.
8. I'm planning to exhibit, and I've never attended before. Nervous too! I'll be making the trip from the US, so there are issues with getting help for the show, a suitable amp and bass(es), lodging and air transportation, etc.
9. I never noticed that. I had an ME8B years ago, and I paid quite a bit of money for it. It quit working, and BOSS wouldn't repair it. After that I bought GT 6B, but it quit working after a while, too. BOSS couldn't repair it either. They are really well built, but there are no replacement parts for them when they break. Just a warning.
10. I'm wondering what is going to replace the BOSS GT 10B. I'm using a Zoom B3, which has a tube emulator. I had a GT 6B, but it broke. I like them both, so hopefully they will come out with a new replacement for the GT 10B. Some songs I like to use more treble, while other songs I like to use more bass. I use different pick ups for different song, too. I might like the treble up with the bridge pick up on one setting of the effects processor on one song and something different on the next song. The volume jumps, though. That is what I use the multi effects processor for. I can switch from song to song, and the volume can be even. I put a DI before the volume pedal, so I can change my stage volume without changing the house volume for my bass. I made a volume pedal from an expression pedal from a church organ to use for this.

Zoom B3

I like the tube emulation circuits in the B3. I usually need a tube preamp to find anything that I like from my BOSS pedals, but the B3 has some things that work all by themselves with my active bass. I've found some nice tones with my passive bass when using the tube preamp, but I haven't been able to find anything very useable using just the B3. The only thing that bothers me about the B3 is that it hums if you don't have your fingers on the strings, which means that using a piezo pickup on an acoustic instrument is not so good.
12. I'm starting to watch the videos on youtube of the London Bass Guitar Show clinics and comparing them to the ones at Bass Player Live. Look here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjbuaNFcdvo
13. Over here in the U.S. the Amp Show and the Nashville Amp and Gear Expo are held in hotels, so that each exhibitor has some privacy in their individual room. Sometimes, though, in the open area format you get a chance to compare the sounds between the different brands available.
14. I hate to be up against the spam police again, but take a look this video taken at the Newbasstone Booth at Bass Player Live 2014 https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=9dCgOXMAnmQ
15. http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=T1Y4NOAsePU&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DT1Y4NOAsePU%26feature%3Dyoutu.be Here is a new video that I made showing the effect of these caps in a bass guitar signal chain.
16. That is some interesting information. I've attached some photos of the caps that I've been experimenting with. I wonder how long it would take to figure out a way to mass produce these today? I've taken a few of these caps apart, and they don't have any glue holding the film to the foil like the ones in the link you mentioned. 17.
This thread is cryptic to the point of sinister.
You're intrigued?
18. OK, sorry about the sour grapes. Didn't mean anything by it. Just hoping you have never had all your tone inexorably banished. If you have, here's an idea on a way to find it again, and at louder volumes. I'm not skirting the issue, am I?
19. I think they are made of tin foil and polystyrene sheeting with mineral oil between. I don't know how to do it. It's just like most things. Someone will throw a wrench in the works if he sees something positive is going on.
20. I bought some modern ones at AudioNoteUK a few years ago. I think they were made in Denmark. I've been told that many more people are producing them these days. All of the new ones are way too much money. Silver or copper foil with sterling silver leads ..... Just rediculous!!!
21.
I didn't think china was worth coup writing, as them and India will just do it any way So got'plans for production then, and wish you best of luck with this
Plans for production would be impossible for a small scale company like mine. I've made 100 of them, and could make a few more hundred of them with the parts available to me now. The paper in oil capacitors that I've been using are over 40 year old NOS Russian military surplus. Hope to find an amplifier manufacturer interested in using this preamp. You would have to hear this in person to understand.
22. The U.S Patent was granted last year (No.8284962) (www.freepatentsonline.com/8284962.pdf) Lazy Japanese attorney couldn't get a Japanese patent. Still waiting for China.
23.
post some more about this, always interested in new stuff. So this is a valve preamp using components no longer typically used?
Hey I just found out that there was an article in Bass Gear Magazine in January about this subject! Here's the link http://btpub.boyd-printing.com/publication/?i=98095&p=44
24. In answer to all the inquiries about plans to build bass tube preamps I've written a white paper that is available on ebay. Here is the link: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=nitewalker+bass+guitar+tube+preamp&_sacat=0 You could request digital delivery and forego any international shipping charges. DISCLAIMER: It's possible that I could profit from the matter mentioned here in the future, so please take anything stated here with a grain of salt.
25.
Hello all. Anyone got user based experience with volume pedals? I need one for a new project and would like to spend as little as possible (sigh). Quite tempted to make one, but on the other hand it is a lot quicker to buy one. I don't need anything with lights telling me how much signal is going through (I can hear that). Don't need anything with added gain either so totally passive. Any info' etc gladly received. Cheers Thomas
I has a BOSS volume pedal that I used for a while, but it was too sensitive. It went from zero to wide open, and made it easy to make too big of a change. I found that by stripping the expression pedal out of an old church organ and mounting it on a piece of plywood that I was happier. I used the pots that came with it and only had to add two 1/4" jacks to make it work. The range of volume change is limited, but that's what I need. Just a suggestion, Cliff
