Whats your favorite rare, exotic bass... no pics no go...
Chris2112 replied to bubinga5's topic in Bass Guitars
John Myung used to play them...
Nice to see a Tung bass there, they are very well spoken of despite the fact that I don\'t think Myung ever did them justice! Nicholas Tung retired from bass building in the mid 90\'s to run a restaurant in New York, but there was some talk on Talkbass a couple of years ago suggesting that he might be returning to building basses. It was confirmed by a Talkbass user but I don\'t think I\'ve seen a new Tung bass. If you want to get in touch you can reach Nicolas at here a couple of Tung sound samples: http://altguitarbass.com/sounds/Yvon-tung1.mp3 http://altguitarbass.com/sounds/Yvon-tung1.mp3 -
so chris just say u bought a bass for £600 and someone offered u £750 would u accept it, now be honest mate, but even at £750 its still worth that or i wouldnt put it up for that now thats disrespectful if it wasnt worth the money but it is cheers anyway
Dave, when I was selling my Alembic I received an offer for £750 collected and my asking price was £600 (which I had paid for it about 5 months previously on the boards). £750 is a good price for a Bongo but £600 is an outrageous price and you've been very fortunate; however Slaptone would have liked more as I doubt the £600 he got for it covered his outgoing expenses. As has been said, this is very much a community-centric forum here where sales are based on trust and mutual respect. I think it's generally considered good form amoung the majority of users to "pay forward" your good fortune here by not making a blatant attempt at flipping a bass for considerably more than you paid for it. As someone said in another thread, prices here are very cheap, generally well below Ebay and high street used prices. We've achieved this by selling our gear at reasonable prices on to other forum members. There have been raised eyebrows in the past about people selling gear on for more than they paid for it, and given long term fluctuations in value this is probably seen as more acceptable than this quick flip. At the moment Dave, this looks like you've bought a bass with no interest in it as an instrument, just an investment for a quick profit. You and Slaptone live relatively close, south of the Tyne. It looks as though you've swooped in when you saw another forum user in need and now you're taking advantage of that by trying to turn a profit on a bass you're not interested in. From the chats we've had both on the forum and via PM you seem like a decent bloke Dave, but don't be surprised that a few users here are finding this all a bit "bad taste".
I fell in love with the Henman B4 as soon as I saw it. Lots of money and not too many about. It doesn't have a fancy exotic wood top, but is made with mahogany /sapele.
I remember seeing that Jauqo XIIXXIIVIIIXXIIXVVV or whatever his bloody name is playing one in a youtube video. I can't believe it's a $6000 bass when it looks like that, and sounds like that and has EMG HZ pickups in it! They're fantastic in a Spector Rebop but I'd ask for more from a boutique bass! And I still can't work out what it is about the bass that is supposed to make $6000 look like a reasonable price to the customer. -
There will always be Thumbs around to be had. They're looking a bit pricier here than they have in a while, I picked up a 1999 bolt on model here last year for £590, and it looked brand new. It also had the more diserable wenge neck, which is generally a lot slimmer than the later ovangkol necks. The K5 is a great bass, so I wouldn't trade it away if you're happy with it. When you start working and get a bit of cash behind you you'll find you can grab those dream basses. You'll also find yourself feeling less inclined to buy basses, funny how that works!

Dave, I don't think anyone is disputing that someone may have gotten an alright deal on a B-Quad (another one sold here for the same price a few months ago when the market was a bit better IIRC). I think it's the way that you're going about this profiteering you're doing here, and it does seem a tad distasteful especially since you got a very good deal from another forum user and a local lad who was in a bit of a jam.

And if you need to hear how good these sound listen to 'Outbound' by Stuart Hamm or "Astral Traveler" by the Gambale Hamm Smith trio! The latter is probably my favourite fusion tune of all time and features a jaw dropping bass solo near the end! It's also very hummable! if I didn't have a Kubicki I'd be after one of these, being a big Stu Hamm fan!

Whats your favorite rare, exotic bass... no pics no go...

Exotic basses are my thing, saying as they're so much more interested that crappy old Fenders and the like. While basses likeFender jazz basses, Musicman Stingrays etc etc are fine workhorses on the pub scene, I prefer something a little more interesting to listen to or play! here are my favourite basses, certainly rare and exotic items... ACG Harlot singelcut: Status S2 (proper 1980's ones): Alembic Series II basses (I am particularly fond of the Stanley Clarke and Mark King type body shapes) Kubicki Ex Factors: I feel very lucky to have been able to own many of the rare and diserable basses I like. I don't think I'd feel as passionate about playing if I had to stick with a Fender and an Ampeg! -
I wouldn't be seen dead with that piece of tat!

I have to say I do find the idea of flipping it for £150 here so soon after buying it uncool. After all, Slaptone was selling it because he needed cash for a sax, he could have held out for more but he gave Dave a fantastic deal. Dave then saying that he's selling it because it's a cracking bass doesn't entirely wash here because if it's so fantastic, you'd want to keep it! It's something that had been mentioned before here, about the morally dubious practice of flipping kit for a quick buck. When I bought my Alembic fretless here, I got it for £600. I sold it for the same, despite the fact I could have sold it for considerably more through the Gallery or Ebay or even here. When I was arranging the sale, I was happy to be able to sell it to a bloke who was really passionate about it and would really dig the bass. I had offers for more cash when I was arranging the sale with him, but I had a community spirited moment and looked back on the bargains I've had here previously. We have a good pool of gear here and we can keep down prices between friends, so surely we can manage that? Failing that, I might buy the Wal MIDI bass off here and advertise it for sale the next day with an extra £1000 on top of what I pay for it! After all, it's a cracking bass so you should accept having to pay more than I did for it 48 hrs previously!

Well, thats absolutely hideous!

What are you listening to right now?
Chris2112 replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
'The Tenacity of Genes and Dreams' by Stuart Hamm. One of his best songs. Some very nice fretless playing and an absolutely ridiculous abss solo too, all carrying along a lovely melody. -
I'd pick active every time. There are times when an "obvious" active sound wouldn't be appropriate and with normal boost/cut preamps on basses, my Kubicki wouldn't sonically 'fit' every gig (mind you, these aren't gigs I'd want to be playing). I could use my ACG there, with it's complex filter based preamp. It works in such a way that you can shape your sound so much more and change it's inherent tone. Even in the studio, I prefer active basses because you'll get that 'sizzle' in your sound which is always pleasing to listen to.

Who is Greg Lake?
-
Well that was a complete load of crap. His tone is awful for a start! His playing didn't fit the song at all and was very sloppy too. The slap was very poor too. Not a fan. He also looks like a knob, but thats beside the point.

Yes, I recall an interview with Stanley where mentioned the Rickenbacker and how it was swiftly retired after he got into Alembic basses. Mind you, thats only natural. The Alembic fretless I used to have is still the best fretless I've ever played, it was class. On another Stanley related note, I'm just listening to "The Toys of Men" because I haven't had it out of the cupboard in a while. Stan's bass solo at the start of the "God Light" section of the title track must be one of the greatest bass solos of all time.

Funny, I was just listening to "RV" by Faith No More and thinking about how awesome Bill Gould is! -
If you're playing in a context where improvisation is happening, then some creative interpretation can be good as long as you keep it in check and the band doesn't end up playing three different songs at the same time!
Ryan Martinie - Thought I'd throw someone different in...Unfortunately under-rated. Bassist of Mudvayne, my 1st venture into Progressive / Math metal (even though they are called "Nu-Metal")...his tone is unique and technique outstanding! Lets face it, Mudvayne WAS Ryan Martinie!
Ryan is an awesome player. He used to be in a prog metal band (the name escapes me, something like 'Broken Altar') which were described as being very "Dream Theater like" and apprently he was very impressive there. He was one of my favourite metal bassists in the early millenium. It's such a shame Mudvayne went down the pan after "The End of all things to come". His playing on the aforementioned record was absolutely incredible. He drove that band! Then they became a lame rock band, a cheap parody of what they once were. -
Not really my kind of music but that Yamaha TRB sounds awesome.

Looks great! Is there any particular reason that the black finish extends over the neck at the bottom?
