Altec's 421 8H is a beautiful speaker!  I had one in the late '70s in an Altec double exponential horn.  Wonderful gear.  I remember that mine had a cast frame unlike the one in the image - I suspect that Altec changed from pressed steel (?) to casting in the few years between production of mine and the speaker in the Acoustic.  Fabulous combo - I lusted after Acoustic gear in the mid '70s but it was well out of reach back then.  Absolute bargain IMO

It is indeed a great speaker hence wanting to keep it, if found a matching one i could make some nice hifi cabs.

you should of kept the one with the horn, a pair of them in a studio would be awsome, tannoys golds with UUMMMPH !

Altec,s hifi speakers could move buildings, literally ! as these were the sound of theatre, see last pic,

    some really great  info here...

they made some truly monstrous fantastic looking speakers 18" hi fi !! yea... id love a pair, but you just dont come across them very often over here, and quite expensive.

Had to do some re-organising in the basement so it was a good opportunity to show off my Acoustic 136 combo.

The combo was purchased new in 1971 from Roger Jenkins Sound Centre in Cardiff. Roger was one of the importers and distributors of Acoustic products at the time and as an employee I enjoyed a small staff discount. The Combo is all original except the original Eminence 100w 8 Ohm 15 ins square magnet speaker has been replaced with an Eminence 400w 4 Ohm  Kappa -C 15ins. (I still have the original speaker). Back in the early 70's I was not knowledgeable enough to calculate whether the Kappa-C had the correct specs for the folded horn reflex cab design, I just thought " well it's Eminence, it's 15 ins and it can handle 400w , so it must be right". Fortunately it has worked and lowering the impedance from 8 ohm to 4 ohm allowed the amp to output it's full potential.

The castors and the H & H bar handles were added to help with handling. It works really well and sounds awesome. Isn't it strange how we used to manage our sound tailoring with 3 simple controls? Volume, Treble and Bass plus a Bright switch to and a little sparkle. These were fine amps built in California with great pride and professionalism. It's really sad how big corporations buy up innovative successful companies only to loose the key personnel and run the businesses into the ground. We are fortunate that those clever engineers and Innovators moved on to create other new enterprises that we bassists have benefited from.

This combo replaced my Selmer Treble'n Bass 50 Mk2 and Selmer 100w 1x18 Goliath rig. I still have the T'nB 50 Mk2 amp and I plan ( One day) to rebuild it with all new replacement transformers, valves and caps. I'm sure it will sound fantastic thro one of my Barefaced Super Compacts.

sad indeed, a sign of the "more to do with profet" times, regarding your selmer, years ago i was in a organ based groove band, sugarman 3, jtq, rubin wilson, johnny guitar watson type stuff, the key player had then a selmer leslie till he could get a hammond one, when he did, he gave the selmer to me as the cab by then was just Fu@k&d, so i chopped that to bits to get the same 2 chan selmer valve amp out and the goodmans 15" speaker, i housed the amp in something i built like a fender bassman 135 surround, and the speaker in a matching cab, i then used that for years in a blues groove band, as it had just the right sound, untill i turned it up and the back of the speaker cab would rattle ! (too shallow bad design on my part) but it did a great job for that sound. nice amp that Selmer Treble'n Bass, it was better than my musicman 75 valve bass head i had at the time i thought.

The tolex, grill cloth and corners are just the same as fender early 70s. I’ve recovered and regrilled quite a few. I usually get it from SolSound in Watford.
    Thanks"

Thanks for that dave, i will look into that. :drinks:

  4. reposted from another thred....

sorry if anything below has already been said above.

    Here is mine, a 136 1x15 combo

50 year old in september, cool as hell and quite rare in the uk i thought till i seen some on here , you dont see many though about.

iv been doing this up for a while now, amp is working fine,  i have taken the back covering off as it has shrank a fair bit so have to get that back on, anyone know where to get the tolex cloth ?

i have a new set of 4 wheels to go on 2 of them lockable as the old ones were f%&k%d.. and some new corners,   it has the very hard to get original speaker in it,  a White Altec 421-8H, H meaning it has the upgraded copper coil fitted which also works great i have seen these these going for nearly as much as what  the combos worth by its self ! ! ( or was this the original speaker ? )

, the amp is a great design,  for example, to change the power transistors these are just screwed to the side and can be pulled out by just unscrewing to two screws, no soldering at all, made for quick changing in the field,  its shown here with the speaker out, but will put it back in and get a better pic.

Well here is a manual for the 136 with aservice manual as well , very handy as the same amp design went into a few of the range.

    https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1039548/Acoustic-136.html

and some upgrade info, says basicly that 2n3055 trannys can be used ?

Lovely combos, great sound, loud as hell and built to last. Still got mine, bought new from Sound Centre Cardiff, although I changed the speaker to an Eminence Kappa 15 300w 4 Ohm back in the 80's.

Still have the original square magnet 100w Eminence driver.

    A true 70's iconic amp.

    GLWTS.

cool, iv just seen the acoustic corp thread in the gear section so iv posted pics there as well, some great looking and condition stuff there.

Blimey! When did you last buy a banger? Or are cars particularly cheap in your neck of the woods?

I had to help a mate buy a pre-loved vehicle a few months back. With the whole of NW London to choose from, the best we could come up with was a 10-year-old Zafira for £3k, which needed new tyres, a new battery, and now a new clutch.

I bought something pretty much identical to this: https://www.japanesempv.co.uk/vehicle/toyota-alphard-30-v6-petrol-4wd-in-uxbridge-london-29523ba4-b30f-4455-a48e-20f63077b9e8

    It's a 3-litre V6 with permanent 4WD and, as a top-of-the-range MPV in Japan, it arrives fully-loaded.

I ripped out the rear pair of seats and chucked them in a skip, reversed the middle bank of three seats, and ended up with the fastest and most comfortable small van in London.

that looks like the jobbie for the job, but 9k ? theres not that much money in the whole world at the mo is there ? 🙂

i was thinking something around 2.5k just to satisfy my mingebagness 🙂 there are a few caddys up here for sale for around that, we will see, i dont think you can use these old ones in London now can you ? without getting the charges ?

  10. iv just got rid of my VW T4 van after 15 years, as it needed far too much work and was sick of patching it up,  so im looking for something else at mo like a little caddy or something like, in the mean time im squeezing what i can in to a VW golf, its amazing what you can get in that little tardis iv found.

    2 x HK actor Bins

    2x HK actor tops

    1 x SWR red head

    1 x bass

    1 big box of leads

1 x box of bits, mics, tools, spares, pa junk.

    3 x microphone stands

    1 x bass bits bag

1 x  mackie desk in a flight case.

    All in a golf 🙂

just stay right outtaa my way if you see me comming toward you with a "no brakes" look on my face 🙂

  11. ped, i think you should add to your decapitated collection and fill the 2 vacant positions,

can i suggest 2 very worthy candidates that should go very well with the two you already have.

    1, Boris Johnson.

    2, Rishi Sunak.

if your up for that, al get the wilkinson's freshly stropped and

al have a parcel to you by the end of the week 🙂

you cant want one that bad anyway, ( edited... prob abit abrupt)

  14. im not saying do this, but with the info you have submitted and the shop can check on line the the clame is gen, if it was my bass i would walk into the shop, show id leave my name and address with proof and take the bass and walk out, if they try and stop you tell them to ring the police but your not leaving with out the bass, at worst the police would have to take the bass or at least an incedent report will have to be made then at least they wont be able to sell the bass, but i would walk out the shop with it and ask them to call the police if wanted at least its in your possesion then, thats only what i would do, i would not be able to stop myself doing just that being so anoyed !, im not sure of the repercussions of that but i would just not care.

loads more bad advice on request 🙂
