4. Does it require double ball end strings or do normal strings fit ? What is the scale length ?
5. I've got it's sunburst brother since two years. This is a keeper. Fat and rich sound with flats or rounds (the sound samples on the Lakland website are easy to reproduce). Slapping between fingerboard and neck PU is somewhat difficult but otherwise great handling and very comfortable on stage. The body is light but huge ! Get it, you will not regret it.
6. I'm missing the switches to vary the scale length and for frets/fretless.
7. For home practice I recommend Boss Micro BR. It has several amp/cab models, effects, drum computer, a built in MP3 player which is very useful for play alongs and last but not least a 4-track recorder. It's battery operated and just a bit larger than a pack of cigarettes. I am using it since 2 years and would buy a new one if it would brake.
8. You might want to try Rotosound RS66LH+ Dropzone Strings. Gauge is 85-105-135-175. But I have no idea how they will fit on a normal bass.

Max Weber (located in Germany, Weber Amps) has cloned the Hiwatt DR201s and added some useful changes (DI out, per tube adjustable bias, etc.). As old Hiwatts in good shape are hardly available or very expensive I think they are a more reliable and affordable alternative if you are after the sound of the old Hiwatts (as I am). I am playing the MYWATT 200 (200 Watt, 4*KT88) since 3 years and highly recommend this amp. It has the classic Hiwatt sound with tons of clear headroom at less weight (the MYWATT 200 weights 22kg).
10.
Hi The Bass This bass belonged to Dave Houck, moderator from the Alembic club did it not? Beautiful instrument, would you consider a trade for a '78 Fender Jazz? I don't really see your bass as an orion as orion refers to the body shape and yours is more like a standard point although it does look to have a set neck (unless it's bookmatched to centre back and front) Jake
That's right. I bought it from Dave 2 years ago which I never regretted. But due to financial pressure I need to sell it ... and it's already sold.
11. For sale is my beloved Alembic Orion 5-string fretless - built 2000 - Original hard shell case in excellent condition. - Zebrawood top, Mahogany body, Purpleheart veneer setting the top off from the body. - Balance Point body. - 5 piece Maple set neck with Walnut veneer - Ebony fingerboard with side dot position markers. - 34" scale comfort taper neck. - Europa electronics (2xmini dip sw Hi/Lo-Filter, 1xmini dip sw filter Q, 3xpot LP roll off freq / volume / PU blend) with side mount jack. The Europa electronics package is a significant upgrade over a standard fretless Orion and their versatility is readily apparent on this bass. I also think the Standard Point body and the Zebrawood top are pretty cool. Other than some slight roundwound marks on the fingerboard, the condition is excellent. With this options the current list price is approx. $7500. I am asking 2400 Euros + shipping (located in Germany, near Cologne).
12. It really hurts seeing it go for that low price. Somebody will make a very good deal ...
13. There's a guy in Germany, Max Weber, who builds Hiwatt Clones but with some clever improvements, less weight, DI-OUT, adjustable bias etc. Check out his website http://www.weber-amps.de/en/index.html. I play the 200 Watt Version which is very similar to a Hiwatt DR201, 4*KT88. It sounds exactly like the DR201. Highly recommended !
14.
There seems to be a few giggable tilt-back combos about - Hartke, Mark Bass, GK What's good? I really like the idea so I get more use as a monitor and can easily see the controls. Are there others I should be looking at?
Although it's a one trick pony soundwise I love the fat sound from my H+K QC 415. It a tilt back wedge design, has 15" neo eminence speaker and weigths about 24kg. Very easy to handle on stage. Because it already has the sound I want I just left the EQ flat for most of my gigs.
15.
That's lovely - quite an unusual Alembic - I'm pretty sure I've seen it around elsewhere (Alembic Club?) TheBass - given you're clearly an Alembic fan, it may be worth having a look at the existing Alembic Thread in gear porn - you'll find it at: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...&hl=Alembic You may want to add images of your Alembics to the collection there
Yes, I posted in the Alembic Club as well. As I am new to this forum thanks for directing me to the Alembic thread.
16. ... and more mouthwatering Alembic gear porn. Due to all maple body/neck, medium scale and slim neck profile it's the perfect slapping machine with extremly fast attack. top: Flame Maple no accent laminate body: Maple neck: Maple, 32" medium scale fingerboard: Ebony with pearloid oval inlays pickups: PJZ controls: 2 volume, 1 filter, mono output body shape: Spoiler peghead: cone finish: transparent purple tuners: chrome Schaller hardware: polished brass birthday: late May 1990
17. The Devon 5 has found a new caring home in Germany. Thank you, David.
18. The Alembic doesn't appear to be easy to manage during a gig ... but that's only untill you have worked with it under live conditions. You can hear very well what the filters are doing and really don't need to see the knobs. It's very useful when your sounds get buried in a loud mix and you want to have your bass stand out without increasing volume. Just turn the filter a bit and you hear them in a different sound spectrum. No other electronics I am aware of can do that.
19. top and back laminates are selected and bookmatched Coco Bolo accents are Purpleheart laminates body is plain Maple Electronics are "Anniversary" type with volume x 2, filter x 2, 2-position Q-switch x 2, mono/stereo switch near the jack, 4-position rotary pickup selector switch (neck, neck+bridge, bridge, off). In stereo mode each PU is routed separately to the output jack (tip: neck PU, ring: bridge PU). This is nice for recordings. I never used this on stage. And yes, I aggree, the knobs are awfully looking and break the beauty of the rest.
20. I have it for a while but it never hurts to show it again. It plays and sounds as good as it looks. It's just a killer.
21. I'm glad you like it, David. My Alembic Stanley Clarke Dlx was the only reason to let it go.
