1. I am currently having a veritable nightmare with my nemesis 2x10 and 1x15 cabs, there humble speakers dying, granted they have had a hard life. Got manufacturers replacement speakers that were both replaced by myself I am more than qualified to do this, I ran them in at low volume for 72 hours as I do with all my drivers. They have had very little hard use (compared to what they used to get I was gigging between 3 and 5 nights a week and out 4 - 5 a month now) and suffered no real abuse, I use an Ampeg SVT 3 and have since I bought the cabs. The speakers looked the same but are obviously not. Could you suggest a better quality speaker for the cabs (Eden Nemesis). To say I am disappointed is an understatement. The cabs have served me well for over about years ( being fed a diet from punk rock to Jazz and experimental playing) and I have replaced the 10's but not the 15 and was hoping to get a lot more out of them than 7 Months. Not to bothered about price n drivers is what I am after the cabs are a great size. The horns are a bit shouty. Any help would be ace!

 7.
I've been playing for almost a year now and through a combination of lack of time to practice/intolerant girlfriend I'm still pretty terrible. However, I think that my main issue is that I don't actually jam with anyone. I feel that I won't actually make any major improvements until I start doing this. However, I almost think its unfair to inflict my playing on others! I was wondering how long people on here had been playing before they joined a band? Also how long until they actually gigged? What kind of level were you at when you first started playing with others/playing live?
Started playing in ernest just after my 16th birthday then got my first regular gig a couple of months later when i learnt some more open chords... Started gigging when I was 15 though not many about 15 -20 strumming acoustic in a country band. Swaped to bass at 18 best thing I have ever done..... Last count done over 3600 gigs approx
 8. Mister Jeffs dvd has landed. In this he explained his views on metronomes. Quite intresting as he basically says lear your stuff without one. The when you are a mega god use one to see if your playing is pushing or pulling. It was quite good actually some diffrent views on stuff and he is proper passionate about music education.
 9. As I am mister vand driver and PA sorter outerer... I wont include that dribble. 2 x bass in one double case. (case has a rip in it inside which is a ball ache) 1 x 6 rack with a 2 u rack drawer to put my crap in. 1x15 cab Eden Nemessis filled full ogf heluim. Great buy lets see how long it will last cos a girl can lift these babies 1 2x10 Eden Nemessis also filled full of helium. 2 trips to van
 10. I dont mind really if they know what they are doing well to be honest even if they dont I tend yo give them a bit of a hand sorting out a sound. Took me a while to sort my sound out with my Ampeg so I know where evrything lives and I ussually have a fiddle when our set has kicked of saying that I dont fiddle much and the outfront guy will be supplied with a pre eq DI for him to balls up my sound. Most kids love it that there going through an Ampeg and they respect my wishes also I am 6ft 6 and 21 stone ha ha..... Charity Gigs I take my DI and thats it last one there were no sound checks and twas real fun but hey its a charity gig and its about the cause and having fun an enjoying your rider....
 11.
Potentially controversial, I know, but I just don't have any empathy towards amplification at all. I have a lovely collection of instruments. And I have some things I plug them into. They're made by people who know what they're doing (Trace/Hartke/Ampeg/QSC/Peavey) but the things fill me with no joy at all, to the extent that I'd consider amp buying a chore and would be more likely to buy another bass whilst trying amps out. Do I need help? What type of GAS do you specialise in? Basses or Amps? Or are you one of those well-rounded individuals who likes BOTH?! Please relate your experiences!
Both I am as sad with all things bass n that. Had a Marshall jcm 800 bass amp that did me for about 1500 gigs then got nicked I am now the proud owner of an Ampeg svt 3 pro and very nice it is.
 12.
no this has been interpreted all wrong put your name here your name goes in a hat in 2 weeks time to be drawn at random you then make a compilation cd of your favourite songs - i don't want to make a basschat compilation of covers or original material, nor do i want to make 1 compilation cd which is then given out/sold/given to charity/whatever send your compilation cd to the person you are drawn with - ie i am drawn with wil and send wil a cd that i have made of songs i like. wil does the same thing and sends it to me. if there's a copyright issue with this and admin aren't happy with it, then i'll sack it off think of it as a now that's what i call music, basschat fans.
sorry wrong end of stick...... you cant copy and exchange thats naughty and will result in a big bottom kicking by the mcps n big labels n mister bono and good ole lars of metallica fame cos you are infact pinchin tunez and they wont like it.
 13.
The copyright issue is probably a valid one, unfortunately. Thats probably going to require everyone to sign a waiver, and we'll have to refuse submission of any cover songs. Why not change it to the Basschat Christmas Jingle CD? Everyone can submit a short 4 line or more verse set to music.
If its all original material and you/we donate some of the cash to chaarity I doubt any one would mind paying a couple of quid via pay pal for it. I dont mind mastering it ( I have a studio n the like) talk about making a rod for yer own back.... If it all goes to one place with specific release rights for each tune ( I can sort that as well) and some one takes ownership for the product there should be no hassle at all. Just be carefull it does not get out of hand with covers n the like. A CD in a plastic wallet with a4 printed who is who would do the trick. and nock up a myspce thing I am sure someone can add more tunes to the media player.
 14.
Not you personally Jase, but I'm surprised at the almost Marmite reaction to our little time keeping friends that I am getting off this thread and..well, Mr Berlin amongst others. p.s. i'm a hippy lol lol
Hi Mister Dood Thats what I was after a good debate keep us all muddling through and get the grey matter working. Hows the dust settled round yer transision to 7 strings and mad low notes? I am also a shuker boy.....
 15.
U mean Solar by Miles Davis?
Thats the one he quoted at bass day.....
 16.
this topic is all kinda mixed up!
All I was after was why did he say no to e metro-gnome????? I still cant find a reason for his rant...... Thats it. N0 More No Less. The more he rants and the more i listen to him my respect for him drops down the respect scale. I have bought his new vdvd to see if the rant is explained Just call me curious.... oh and after seeing him at bass day there is no question he can shred play nice chordal stuff. But to claim we will all have to play solar sometime. I reckon some one best tell the bass player out of the Sex pistols ha ha
 17. I still cant find out why no metronome though and I have been digging for a while now! On the beat behind the beat infront of the beat I understand and express the need to have a deep understanding to all and sundry. There are many songs that dispay this mustang sally behind the beat - midnight hour pushing the beat, any acdc tune on the nail. I get my students to play each tune to a simple drum beat and get a feel for where they are sitting on the beat. Then tell me where they are on the beat. Good fun as well. CrazyKiwi if your drummer cant find his place on the beat i think its P45 time (Unless he drives the van) no excuse in a gigging band. I cant find a single interview where mister Jeff explains why no metronome. Please help!!!!!!! I would like to add, in one of his lessons in the 80's he expressed singing your lines etc I have done this for years now, (stoped me shredding like the teenage metal head i was) well since then but if you heard him solo at bass day where was the breathing space.
 18.
A metronome improves timing, what else do you need to know?
My point is he says they are the tool of the devil and to not use them...
 19. Howdey Gang Not one to stir up a bit of a Hornets nest.... Any thoughts on Mister Berlins Not using a metronome n all. I do subscribe to his idea but I feel using a metronome helped me gauge improvments in technical excersise's n the like. I thought his speeach at bass day was cool but I still cant find anywhere what he thinks i/We should do to improve our time etc. He reckons we dont play with a metronome however we might if we play dance music where you need to follow a click track as thats what is required however he gets rid of this statment by saying there is only jazz and classical that are worth any value ( In a nutshell i cant say exactly as I am not mister Jeff) To be honest its down to Mister Jeff that I moved a rung up the theory ladder as I studied all his coloums in Guitar Player till the next Issue came out.
 20. First bass played- A Hondo Rickenbacker copy was quite nice if I remember. I then beg n Borrowed loads of nice instruments till My Kramer Flying V still have it as well.... Still sounds great short scale as well so good in the studio for guitarists.
 21. Been using Nemmis 1 x 15 n 2 x 10 for over a year done about 100+ gigs and they rock a big ione and there light as box of feathers... GReat tone as well. have used the big eden stuff for a couple of tours but they were as heavy as a heavy thing with bricks on.... good though. Playing an ampeg through em
 22. Been over the pond for a gig then come back all in one go maddness and never again....
 23.
I was rather hoping that there were like lists of power hungry agents ready to make a buck out of us and do all that kinda work for us because we are but mere musicians and are therefore as much use as a trap door on a lifeboat when it comes to keeping appointments, making decisions or organising anything. I'll put an APB out on our webby anyway to the effect of what you said there Slaphappy. Cheers.
There are agents who specialise in putting on tribute shows. Tehse have grown in recent years they are however very specific in what they want and will get you good cash and good gigs. Finding a tour manager is not an easy task. Also they are not cheap they ussually work two ways (I was one) A percentage of the profits of the tour/gig or a one of fee. There duties will be like any other tour manager but you need a good contract drawing up. As far as getting work spend some time researching tribute bands in a simlar style. Find where they are playing then. Find out the booking agent. Job Done well started.....
 24.
Hi all, I've recently been going through a weird time with my playing in band situations lately, I've been playing for about two and a half years and have taken lessons for around the last six months (and thoroughly enjoying them!) and have learnt all the theory I've been taught and tried my best to apply it to my playing. The first band I was in I could barely play at all so just rooted 8ths at a steady rhythm was enough of a challenge! I then joined a more straight up rock band with two guitars and found myself playing anything I could to be heard above the racket that those two were busy making =D The band I find myself in currently is far more laid back with a female lead singer with a very soul voice and a single guitar and drummer... during the last practice I found myself torn between playing some more complicated runs and so on or simply trying to find a good simple groove and supporting the song. Every time I found myself doing a difficult run I felt insincere and as if I was showboating akin to the 'every song must have six solos' guitarists that plague music. Yet every time I simplified to just grooving along I felt like there was so much more I could be doing... I know theres some real seasoned pro's on here whos playing I really admire and I'd be really curious to here about what you guys think to overplaying parts? Is it a matter of 'whats best for the song' and how does one decide this, as 'best' becomes very subjective as I'd gladly listen to a great bassist in a rubbish band when Im sure average-joe-gig-goer wouldn't. So is it better to stick to the groove or to get a bit more complex, what do you reckon? Peace. Tyler
sounds old and boring but every cake needs its icing (or does it) not everbody likes icing what you have to do is find out what icing your cake needs for it to taste the best n if its not the icing are they are after it may be a diffrent cake. I would listen to the players that are respected in the style you are trying to emulate in the band your in, that is of course if you are the songwriter then you may alreay have your own voice that you wish to project. I feel listening to loads of great bass players there is a few.... solid Cliff Williams. Busy Rocco. Busy Steve Harris... the right part Tony Levin. Great feel Pino. Keep it together and busy as hell Mister Entwistle. John Pattituci just right for whats needed upright with and orchetra or six string widdle mit der jazz. By itself Mister manring.... where do you stop.
