BC's new classifieds section - your opinions please
Big_Stu replied to ped's topic in General Discussion
I've bleated on too much elsewhere, but I'll put my thoughts here just to keep it all under one roof. :-) I don't like the new system. They're less visible to experienced users, never mind the newbies who might not know they're there. More importantly, they've been taken out of the flow of the community. They don't drive discussion any more, and given that BC is a discussion forum... this is a shame. As for the 'problems'... No thumbnails, excessive bumping, not stating prices, lack of detail in ads... are these really problems? The community is pretty good at self-policing, and it's usually sorted pretty quick. I've never noticed it to be a big issue. Yep, the mods have to get involved sometimes, but that's why we - and all other forums - have mods. I honestly think some members are confused as to the purpose of BC. Unless I'm wrong, it's primarily a discussion forum, not a marketplace to facilitate the buying and selling of bass gear. We should be paying as much for the former as the latter. I don't buy and sell that much on here, but I'd still pay a few quid a year to help keep the lights on. I'm sure plenty other users would, too. Those that don't want to or can't afford it... don't have to. Maybe do as they do on TalkBass, and restrict avatars & other bits and bobs of functionality (off-topic?) to those that donate? I'm grateful to Ped & co. for trying to improve things and keep it viable, but I don't think this is the way to do it.
This pretty much sums it up for me; even though I've stuck a toe in the water of buying & selling on here it's not actually transpired. But I do now owe WOT 15 mins of my life for saving me the trouble of all that typing. -
You haven't said what you'll be wearing yet? Who's going to be brave enough?

Interesting; there was a bit of that around. Mud's hit "Dynamite" was first offered to The Sweet but they knocked it back, possibly when they were trying to get away from having ChinniChap hits written for them.
May still bid, even though I feel bad about questioning its authenticity. What better way to make amends, though, than bidding highest?
I'm sure it would be appreciated........... or seen as a failed attempt to get it for less I'm equally OK that my
While I'm no expert on the many & varied versions of Fender guitars
was an accurate statement to make.
Just take a look at their online review of the 2008 American Standard Precision. It's all about a Fender Jazz!
I can imagine; "One is a basic instrument that's changed very little since it came off the factory assembly line....... and the other is ..........". ... then fill the rest of the page(s) with adverts for the same thing ........... in different colours.
Played that one for a few years - I found a swift kick to the singers nads aided the falsetto.
It'd be a tough call who could shatter a wine class the quickest; Alan Williams or Andy Scott - and they're both as capable of hitting them notes now as they did back then. I heard a story that "Showaddywaddy" got their name from the background lyric to that Rubettes song.

Oh no! Don't get me going again! I was just getting over not knowing what it was, or how much they got for it. Warmoth neck with a knock-off logo now?? Aargh!!

get screwed! or more specifically where to buy screws for a bass...
Big_Stu replied to LukeFRC's topic in Bass Guitars
yeah I could tell you about bad screws. Problem is I've just moved here and can't find an oldfashioned hardwear store. You know the type you take in what you want and hand it to an old guy in a overall who mutters and then disappears behind the counter to find an old box and then sells you the exact number of screws you need.
Northern Guitars on Call Lane, Leeds - opposite where MusicGround were, used to be great for that kind of thing. He still has a rummage box of odds n sods to go thru too. -
Please help out bass legend Joe Osborn!
Big_Stu replied to TomRichards's topic in General Discussion
Because it is a Social media based contest, it's no different then those two pieces of rubbish, X Factor and UK Idol, that you exported here.
......... you're not his promoter too, I hope. -
I had a Fender Mexican Tele a while ago. It had "Fender" stamped into the bridge between the pickup & the saddles & "Made In Mexico" on the back of the headstock, that one looks possibly like a worn "custom shop" logo?. It also had TELECASTER in block caps just under the Fender logo. While I'm no expert on the many & varied versions of Fender guitars I'm finding it difficult to think why a partial logo would have worn of on what otherwise looks to be a fairly good cond guitar, and for a Mex the price seems a bit rich if it hasn't reached his reserve yet. ......... and yes, the neckplates & most other Fender parts are easily available. edit: mine didn't have two string trees either, it had one round one.

Can the X Factor judges hear what we hear on the TV?
Big_Stu replied to leschirons's topic in General Discussion
As above, and the last two pages since Doddys post have been a waste of bandwidth you could have used to argue about custom bone nuts on your "fiver". X factor is IMO an extended advert designed to sell product to people who care more about having and expressing an opinion that may count towards the "winning" selection than it`s actual value as music. The involvement is what sells, the by product is a CD and a video and maybe a tour and most importantly, newspapers. The back story is what sells it to the "voters"irregardless of the lack of actual musical talent. The back story is what you hear burbled out on breakfast tv by yet more celebrities. When the act or it`s ability isn`t enough, you are invited to care about the judges and their lifestyles, partners, drunken binges etc. The fact that some of you here expressed quite passionate opinions about rather bland singers after minimal exposure proves it works very well. You are involved, have an opinion, care... Imagine how it feels after watching it for years.... Me, I prefer listening to a bit of music.
Brilliant, perceptive, insightful and about as much as needs said. -
A significant number of the suggestions so far were not in any way shape or form "glam" songs or bands, some were barely contemporaries of them. There was 4 years of "glam" hits which means plenty of material. I read just the other day that a US "football" team walk onto the pitch to GG's "Rock n Roll Part 1" Since what's left of Slade & Sweet are currently on tour see if you can catch one of the gigs (purely for the purpose of research of course) - there's a few still to go I believe. Andy's Sweet still use "The Stripper" as their build up track. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afjrtqwWkKw http://www.ents24.com/web/artist/18679/Slade.html
I've tried, but I just can't get on with one of the band members. He is incredibly rude to the lovely friendly guys who run our rehearsal space, he wants creative control though all he can offer is obstructive comments about songs he refuses to play, at rehearsal he doesn't play to best of his ability as he says he wants to save himself for his gym/tennis session, he never seems to want to be at any of our sessions when he's there and he is generally grumpy, narky and sulky.
Do you know for sure that he's actually as capable as you're supposed to believe? .... if not then the above seems like a bit of a smokescreen.

Short scale for less than £200! Perfect for little hands!
Big_Stu replied to MiltyG565's topic in Bass Guitars
I was told when I bought my first EB3 back in '79 that the EB3 and EB0 were medium scale, & that they're short-er scale rather than short scale. Though there was a one-off short-scale EB3 in the early 70's - but only according to a guy I knew who said he'd got one. IIRC 28.6" in the OP, is significantly shorter than any EB3 - and the "short" Fenders? -
Some people have asked me 'how much should I donate' because they don't want to appear insulting by sending a small amount. Truthfully there is NO amount too small, but most people donate between £5 and £20.. please see i'm only saying this to help people feel less insecure about donating, rather than saying you need to donate a certain amount.
Where's a "phew!" icon when you need one? In recent months I've joined a couple of new forums, one that I tried to check out was mostly closed to non-subscribers, which involved an upfront £10 annual payment (it was a Ford one). I'd prefer to see the quality of a place before being told what to think it was worth. However, a similar one asked for - but didn't demand - a one-off joining donation of £5-£10, for which you received a car-sticker to promote the site with......... and to be clique-y, not that a Ford owner can be in a clique, but you know what I mean. Knowing what suckers bassists are for having assorted stickers on their cases ( huh? - it's just me? ) I thought that idea might have legs?
Nottingham? There isn't that much there in terms of instrument stores unfortunately.
Only been to Nottingham a couple of times, both times for gigs, at least that was the alibi but damn she was good. I was surpised to see there was a Hard Rock Cafe there - but it was closed & next chance I had to go it had gone completely.
How much are they asking? Is it worth taking a punt, knowing you can part it out and flog the bits without losing if it's an iffy copy with nice parts?
It was only just in so no price was set; I did hear the shop girl saying someone on the phone wanted pics of it sending. I'll try to take some phone pics next time I'm passing - if it's still there*. Assuming it was that Strat, they had two others, a bright red Crafter copy - and an Encore that possibly had an illegible autograph in silver marker on it - or a bit of scribble. * it wasn't; gone already & she didn't know how much for.
i was actually thinking the other day that it would be great to have some kind of BassChat approved/reccomended retailer scheme, a sticker or notice that could be awarded to those shops that go above and beyond the regular customer service. matt
Not a bad idea, kinda "Our bass section is Basschat.co.uk approved"? The shop may want facts & figures to see if they feel it's worthwhile, or maybe want to wait until after GuitarChat, Drumchat, VocalsChat and ThemshakeyeggshapedthingsthatsoundlikelittlemaraccasChat are all up and amalgamated to make it a do-able. Course any shop that doesn't rate BassChat doesn't deserve a rating.

I thought the GuitarGuitar in Edinburgh a good shop, helpful but not in your face staff who knew their gear. Went into the new Reidy's in Blackburn Lancs the other day & was greeted as though I'd taken a dump in the doorway as I entered; obviously geared up to catch the students from the college next door but the 6 or 7 staff in there were failing miserably at trying to fool each other they were busy. Dawsons in Manchester is a good one too, let you get on with it and generally good eggs.
My Chandler (Richmond) strat has a warmoth body made from SOLID flamed maple.
Yeah, I had a look at the Warmoth site, some very nice pieces - and priced accordingly - though fairly too. I'd be surprised if he shifts it quick so I'll go in for a better look some time & see what he knows about it. If the logo is a fake it's the best one I've ever seen, either in life or on BC/other sites.
-
I have, that's what made me find the Dan Smith reference, but nothing like the body that one has. I'm not in the market for any more guitars, but damn - it was so nice looking I wanted to know if it was mega-rare or something. A thought's just occurred to me, should have thought before. it's maybe a Warmoth body with aftermarket parts on a Fender neck?
Need to see pics, lots of them. You may be lucky in one of two ways: a bargain genuine USA, or a bargain well made 'clone'. Then again you could be unlucky
If I do they'll be crappy ones off my phone. It did have "Made in USA" on the logo. Only clue I could turn up, knowing practically jack about Fender changes over the years, is that it's possibly an early 80's "Dan Smith model"???

A collectors (Junk?) shop near me has the nicest Strat I ever saw in it's window; and I'm not that big on Strats as they're so common but not this one! The rest of the stock is a few copy electrics, 2 x cheap acoustics, old vinyl records & Star Wars figures, furniture etc. The Strat looks like a Birdseye maple body, not much figuring to it though, just the burrs. All of the metal parts are gold plated - apart from the saddle screws. Even the pickup poles are gold. The pickups are white cased & have a name on them in a gold script which I can't make out. It's a really nice machine, I did wonder if it was a Fender neck on a custom body, the logo looks legit, has "Stratocaster" in small capitals just under the logo, so I'm guessing it's a recent one and the "Contour Body" text at the end of the front headstock. Looks in mint cond from what I could see, no trem arm though. Just seemed a strange shop to have such a nice guitar in & I wondered if it was maybe a custom shop job (haven't seen the back of it) or a high level production model??

Would you buy a bass or amp from Tesco?
Big_Stu replied to brensabre79's topic in General Discussion
I know a guy who has documented proof of what Tesco did to him; it was so unbelievably nasty and unnecessary that I'm not even going to repeat it on a forum in case I'm the next one in their sights.
