1. Another new Jap has just surfaced on the bay....

    eBay

Its a SB1000, and its the 4th (or 5th) run on eBay, its dropped from £750 down to £595 now and as far as I know no-one has ever bid on this every time its been listed. He could be up for a good off-ebay offer if anyone wants a padouk one?! :)

  2.
And sometimes even BCers fess up to such jolly japes :)

I used to have a mate who did the same to all his auctions - when he'd run out of folk to ask it he'd try me, then get all sniffy at me for being a cock and declining his request.
haha

  3. Thanks for the heads up guys, I had no idea about the timing of when you put in the ebay bids, i guess that could explain why I've lost a few things in the dying seconds of an auction and couldn't work out why!! you live and learn eh! :)

  4.
Good one. It's very cool IMHO that the £17 bass body became your main bass. Even if it's got who knows what aftermarket parts on it, it's still cool!

I've got no instrument buying budget at the moment, but I'm still continuing with lowball bids, as I think they're unlikely to come up anyhow. And if I do get a £400 instrument for £100, then I'll just have to ride out the extra couple of months budget recovery. The ebay buying equivalent of crying all the way to the bank I think.

Here's a typical lowball from me. Apologies for it not being a bass :)

What's this person doing, making increment after increment, and giving up at £60? Not sure I understand that.

Oh, and sorry about anonymising the buying ID. Anyone regular on here who wants to know my buying ID, just PM me. Not sure about making it 100% public on a forum who whoever to see though.
I never put in any bids until the last few minutes, I just watch items for most of their life. I see things getting bids when there's 10 days to go and it sometimes surprises me why the bids go in so soon...

  5.
Bizarre!

It could be a 600 - the early run did feature a bolt-on neck, but according to "popular wisdom" this became a set neck in 1981 - & this seems to be an '82. Catalogue scans & various photos don't show the bevel & also seem to have the 16-pole fully-enclosed Humbucker. The "mystery" example does have the ser/par (or possibly coil tap) switch though.

I dunno if it's just me, but it looks as though it's got the wider bridge.

Definately an oddball, I reckon it's absolutely genuine - but the jury's out on the model.

    Good price at the moment.

    Pete.
Could it possibly be a TSB-550 though? They did have a thru-neck rather than bolt on, and didn't come in the solid black finish, but who knows with Aria...

  6.
people were complaining that maybe non-bassists would join simply to sell guitars and stuff and to discuss non-bass subject, hence making it no longer basschat. your method helps against this how?
i was just being sarcastic.

the off topic stuff is hilarious, but there's no need for a non-bass section of the site, including a non-visible bit. there's a lot of forums for other instruments already out there and they do a perfectly adequate job, there's no need to dilute the basschat brand and include more instruments.

widening for more mass appeal happens all over the commercial market, and it just dilutes the original idea and ruins what everyone loved from the initial concept. i work for a very successful video games company and we have made our key music product more mass market every time we release a new version of it, we have pretty much ruined it now and are struggling to bring it back to the original core product that everyone loved in the first place and made us so successful.

please dont let basschat go this way...

  7. At least you didn't fall as stupidly as our singer did the other month....

We were playing (don't hate me) Teenage Dirtbag in our covers band. There's a line that goes something like 'my boyfriend's a dick, he' gives a kick' and our singer, showing off to the young girls dancing down the front decided to do a kung fu kick in the air for that line.

He jumped up, nice kick, looked cool-ish, then landed on the stage, first foot down landed on a mic cable, which rolled and he slid and fell flat on his back...

The song floundered around the remainder of the verse as the the 4 of us stood there doubled up with laughter trying to keep playing the song while he jumped up, dusted himself down, looking bright red with shame and the girls he was trying to impress had since gone and stuck their tongues down some guys throats half our age who didnt fall flat on their back in the middle of a pub...

Definitely our funniest gig to date. what a cock. :)

  8.
perhaps if you made the other instruments forum invisible to non-members in the same way off topic is, that would stop the whole problem of alienating people?
Or alternatively you just ignore everyone that wants to talk about anything other than bass, or off topic important discussions like which brand of baked beans are the best, or whether a meal at midday is lunch or dinner, then that would be best. Lets be honest, none of really like those skinny stringed guitards...

  9.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Westone-Quantum-X850...=item45f18023b2

Westone Steinberger copy-ish. The end of the neck where the headstock would normally be looks a bit beat up. Is this a problem?

Edit: Dodgy repaint job as well. Could be a bargain for someone uninterested in the cosmetics?

    Where is Jon?
Ahh! I wanted one of those so much when I was a kid.... I'd completely forgotten about them! Can't be bad for £1.25!

I'm sure you could get that black paint off and restore it quite easily.

  10.
The SB series basses just keep on coming. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Aria-Pro-II-SB-900-b...=item3efd953b76
What on earth's going on, where are they all coming from??

...and why isn't there the one I want yet! ;-)

  11.
Not surprising given the approaching-top-end price and the bit which says "actives need slight attention" with no indication of what's wrong with them. It might just be a dodgy switch, or a dry joint, or a duff pot. It also might be the beginnings of the mystery fault that fries the pickup leaving you with a £100 repair bill & a non-stock example.

Caveat Emptor at work I feel.

    Pete.
Yeah that wouldn't exactly fill me with confidence buying it either. It is probably something serious, or surely he'd have fixed it himself before selling it to get a better sale price? After listing it 3 times he's quite determined to sell it but not so set on making sure it works properly.

    Avoid like the plague!

But the Walnut one that's up on eBay, that's different, it looks in fantastic condition, just a bit pricey at £850...
