1. I've still got pretty bad GAS for an Aria Pro II SB1000 and a Kubicki Ex-Factor...

I thought buying a 30th Anniversary Stingray 2 days ago would quench my thirst but its just made me want to spend more... If my bank manager is reading this, sorry! :)

  2.
Ive only had one guy ask to play my bass at a gig. There was no chance as i saw him in the local paper before for vandalising cars. I would only let friends and band mates have a go.

As for my amp there always seems to be a re-occuring problem. I get booked in my band quite often where theres like 4/5 other bands playing. And in 98% of them ive been the only guy to turn up with my amp. Usually i know the other guys and they ask if they can use it whcih if fine as long aas they dont play with any EQ settings etc. Theres always one guy there that asumes they can play it without asking. After this happening on many occasions i now just turn the amp off before they play and take the kettle lead out. If they arnt profesional enough to bring an amp and they dont ask then they should either go through the pa or they can simply not play. May make me sound like and arse but its not my problem.

Does anyone else have people turn up to gigs and assume that your amp is a comunal amp?
If people assume my amp is communal I ask if their wife is. That usually stops them touching my gear! :)

  3.
A couple of years ago I was at band practice and went outside for a crafty drag. I returned to find the drummer playing my bass, a cretinous, moon-faced grin pasted to the front of his egregiously mis-shapen head, as if to say "Look at what I'm doing! I can't keep time, learn songs or maintain civil punctuality but I can play bass."

His ghastly girlfriend was present so I forebore to comment, but a noticeable 'atmosphere' ensued. I later shopped him to the FSA for certain professional financial irregularities of which he had he bragged.

My arm is long and my vengeance is total.
Haha, harsh but fair...

  4.
I'm not saying "don't buy it" - that's your call. Just do a bit of research first or you could end up with something quite different from what you wanted! :)
Yeah, research is definitely wise!

I bought an Ampeg 8x10 years ago, then went out and bought an Astra estate to get it around in. I didn't bother measuring either beforehand though... The cab with flightcase was 2" too big for the car I'd bought especially for it! doh!!

  5. Levy's make some good long and wide straps, I've just ordered one today as my shoulder has been getting really painful recently too!

  6. We do a lot of gigs on the covers circuit and we try avoid doing any for less than £300.

A rather well known mock-Irish chain of pubs that you may well know pay out £300-350 depending on the night of the week and how well they know you. Some of the small one-off pubs have tiny budgets and can only stretch to £250. That big Aussie pub chain pay out around £500 upwards. For that they get 1x45min and 1x60min set usually.

Pubs that charging on the door need to be giving you at least £500 for a normal set like that.

For weddings we always charge between £1k and £1.5K depending on distance travelled and set-up times as well as the set length. If you've got to travel 100 miles and be there to soundcheck before the ceremony even starts then it's your whole day down the pan!

Any corporate event, start at least £2k and see if they accept it or bat you down. I've been on both ends of this one from booking bands for my company and being the band being asked to play, big companies have a ton of cash to waste, my company paid a major label 3-piece who are big fans of Buck Rogers about £7.5k for a 30 min set last year.

    Hope that helps!

  7.
o.k. here we go..
as we all know, our tastes in music are highly subjective, and sometimes devisive (particularly judging by some recent threads).
people like different stuff at different stages of life, and my personal tastes constantly change/develop/revert etc.. i've liked pop, mod, metal, goth, punk, funk, electro, hip-hop, reggae, d'n'b, industrial, classical etc., etc., in my time, and still like to think i have reasonably eclectic tastes.
the psychology of music is a fascinating & exhaustive subject, and has a lot to do with our formative years in appreciating it.
but, can you remember the tune or the band that got you into the bass guitar (specifically) ?
    be honest !
embarrassingly for me it would have been john taylor from duran duran. i was a child of the eighties, so that's my excuse.(i still rate his playing highly, it's just me cringing at the thought of being a 14-year old new romantic that makes me shiver !)
so come on, who or what got you started ?
Phil, exactly the same for me, JT! A highly under-rated player... I've got some pretty bad photos of myself all new-romantic with floppy blonde fringe and big flowing shirts too! haha

The tune that did it for me was New Religion, from the Rio album. wicked line.

  8.
What an awful monstrosity of a pedal!
Blimey!!!

I have the Korg DT-10. Its the most robust spot-on tuner I've owned. Even stands up to drunk rhythm guitarists stumbling onto it mid-gig... The LEDs are really clear on any stage and its completely silent, no nasty clicks. I can't enough good things about it, I had one Korg's rack tuners before that and again, so so good.

  9.
Do you - or any other Forumite - have a link (Youtube?) which shows his unusual playing style? I read in 'Bass Player' magazine that he held his forefinger and thumb together and struck the strings almost as if he had a plectrum between them.

    Cheers Clarky

PS, fantastic player and his basslines were part of the soundtrack of my youth
Hey Clarky,

Check this clip. There's a part where you see Bernard's technique of thumb & forefinger clearly...

  10. What got me started was listening to Duran Duran. I listened to John Taylor's basslines when I was about 11 and thought he was the coolest guy in the band (pushed by my girlfriend at the time who though he he was hot). Listening to him I got into a lot more funk, particularly Chic, Bernard Edwards, is still in my opinion untouchable.... For pure showmanship and bloody-mindedness it has to be Gene Simmons (and Nikki Sixx, although Nikki clearly is no musical inspiration).

    So yeah:

    Bernard Edwards
    John Taylor
    Gene Simmons

    :)
